Hi Freind ,

GCSE Coursework contributes a certain percentage to the final GCSE grade you are awareded for the subject. For example EdExcel Science coursework is worth 25% per subect (Chemistry, etc) and say you get a B in the coursework and an A* in the exam, you will probably still get an A* overall. Some subjects, such as Graphics Products is mostly dependent on coursework as its worth a huge 60%!!! The final exam is worth 40% so the coursework is more important there.

Im not very sure about if coursework can bring your final grade down, so im not going to mislead you  .Anyone, if I am wrong about the above coursework information, please advise so I can stand corrected.

If you get an A* on your exam but a high B in your coursework, you might be lucky that you will still have an A*. If it a low B with an A* in the exam, you might get an A. In addition, you could try predicting the UMS yourself, and calculating it.

How does that work?

Just out of curiousity what if you had got an A and A* in your coursework for R.E, but got a B overall - does that mean i got a C in the exam?

When I did maths the 2 courseworks counted for 10% each.. so coursework contributed for 20% overall, in science it was 25% which is a lot. So it's important to get the best possible mark going into the exams for sure.

A* and Bs could level out to be an A.. or it could be A* but the grade boundaries may be high.. when I did it to get an A* in maths I think you needed 85% or 90% I think

When they add them up, they add the marks from the coursework and the marks from the exam, then take a grade from that. so it depends on the marks not the grades, thats why its hard to predict without knowing your marks

It depends on how much coursework is worth. In the more academic subjects like maths, coursework is only worth 20%, so if you do badly in it but well in the exams, it shouldn't affect your overall mark, and even if you do really well in it, you'd still need to do well in the exams to get a good grade overall. In the more vocational subjects like technology, it's worth 60%, so it's really important to get good marks in coursework and not so important to do well in the exams. It's obviously worth doing as well as you can though because it takes the pressure of a bit.

Following on from what other people have said, coursework is actually about 20% for most subjects.

Take a look at this statisitcally.

Say you get a D in the coursework about 8% for example. Lets not get confused here, the coursework is worth 20%, so when I say 8% I mean 8% of the GCSE not of the coursework component.

Say it's 77% to get an A* in the exam itself, but say its 18% to get an A* in the coursework (it is usually this high), so overall 0.77*0.8+0.18=about 80%

But say you get a D in the coursework about 8% of the total gcse or 0.016% of the coursework mark. How much extra do you need to get in the exam to still get an A*? 0.8x + 0.08 = 0.80 so x = 0.90 so the extra amount you will have to get in the exam is 10% based on this example.

Just goes to show, it's worth going into the exam with the coursework mark supporting you.

Good luck to everyone this summer

If you really messed up, you could theoretically blow your chances of getting A* (if your aiming for that of course) before you even take any exams if you think about it.

There's no reason why you should mess up cw though at gcse.. there's sooooooo much help the teachers practically write it for you! Like if you make a mistake or miss a little bit out, they hand it back and tell you what to put in  it's great really,ah the good ol' days :frown:
