Further maths GSCE to A LEVEL maths

Im in Year 10 and im planning on taking maths a level, however i currently am in set 2 in my school meaning i will do Stats alongside my maths gsce instead of further maths. I heard alot of people say further maths helps ALOT with maths a level and im scared i will fall behind if i dont do it. I asked my maths teacher about still doing further despite my set level and she recommend i stick with stats as it apparently also comes up in maths A LEVEL. Should i go back and ask to move up just for further maths or would i be okay doing maths a level with just normal maths GSCE and stats?
I have been studying stats for the past two months (and i understand it well and seem to be good at it) so if i move up i will be a bit behind but if it is worth it in the future i do not mind catching up.

Hey @whatuser,

Since not all schools offer Further Maths at GCSE, it's not uncommon for students to start Maths A-Level without it. Nonetheless, it is helpful as depending on your exam board lots of the content in the first year of A-Level Maths has some crossover with the Further Maths GCSE content. If your teacher is absolutely set on you not taking Further Maths GCSE, you could always find a textbook and look over the material in the summer prior to starting A-Level Maths.

However, I would recommend talking to your teacher and the Head of Department again about the possibility of doing Further Maths GCSE if you're definitely planning on studying Maths at A-Level. You may have to sit a mock exam/test to show them you're capable of moving up a set; it's understandable that they don't want to place you in a class that doesn't suit your ability, so it's important to demonstrate that you're able to understand higher-level material.

Hope this helps and best of luck,
Eve (Kingston Rep).

I’d say don’t bother unless you’re confident with your other subjects & have more time to spare - as someone who is taking maths & fm A Level and took both Stats and Further maths gcse, there isn’t that much in it and if you’ve already started the stats course I’d just stick with it/ read through fm in the summer before y12 instead!

Level 2 F Maths does not significantly help with A level - we don't even offer it yet get students into Oxbridge.

Focus on getting 9s across the board not in doing additional non-GCSEs.

I found flashcard formulas really helpful, especially for stuff like standard deviation! As well as mind maps for each topic (eg probability etc) and mind maps for every kind of graph/diagram. If you have the textbook then I’d say try to read a bit ahead in the holidays
for the 6 mark qs if it asks you to evaluate an experiment or smth just be as difficult as possible 😂 complain about anything, people being uncomfortable with the experiment etc if you’ve run out of negatives!

lmk if you’d like any more advice
