SFE funding after repeating first year and restarting AHP course

I started a BSc Operating Department Practice course in 2023, repeated the first year, but was withdrawn due to academic failure. The university has confirmed my withdrawal to SFE.

I've now started the same course (Year 1) at a different university and submitted a new SFE application. Will I still get full funding i.e both the Tuition Fee Loan and Maintenance Loan for this new course BSc Operating Department Practice at different University?

Hi Skp_,

If you have 2 years previous study (this is including the part year that you withdrew from), you would ordinarily need to self fund year 1 of the new course. Can you confirm the duration of the new course and if this is full time or part time?

Thanks, Clare

are you sure? as this is EXCEPTION course and getting contradicting advice now, been told previously """its If you are applying as a new student (previously withdrawn) then yes, full funding for all years since we don't take previous study into account for exception courses. Thanks, Leah."""

as the title says its AHP course and then there is course name mentioned as ODP which is exception course

Hi

Funding on a new AHP or NHS course will be exempt from previous study and ELQ rules. Therefore, if the student already holds a degree or has previous study they will still be eligible to access the full package of funding (so long as they are not already registered in the field they are planning to study).

Repeat study on AHP and NHS courses will be treated as standard meaning that the student will only qualify for one additional year of full funding.

As you have started this course already and done 2 years, this will count as previous study and what Clare advised earlier would be correct.

Thanks,
Claire

If it’s pre-reg AHP course and previous course didn’t lead to qualification / withdrawn, it’s exempt from previous study rules. It’s in black and white. Please quote section on guidance you are referring to and provide me a link 🔗, thanks

According to the SFE ‘Assessing Eligibility’ guidance for AY 25/26, students starting a pre-registration AHP course are entitled to disregard previous full-time higher education study when determining the number of years of tuition fee support. I am starting the BSc ODP or AHP on NHS Exempt list, pre-reg course, previously repeated 40 credits in Year 1 and withdrew without qualification. Could you confirm that my previous study will indeed be disregarded under this rule?”

Yes, that's right - this all sounds fine.

If you want, we can check our course database and that will confirm for sure that the course is an exception.

Can you please tell us the university that's offering this course?

Thanks, Graeme

Thanks, yes - this course is definitely an exception.

So, just to confirm: you'll be entitled to funding regardless of your previous study.

From what you've said you've already submitted your application to us online, is that right?

Thanks, Graeme

Can you confirm if this is the case if it is repeat study of the same course but at a different uni? Post #5 from SFE Claire contradicts your advice.

Thank you, will apply soon.

Just to say, are you asking if you retain the additional year?

For exception courses, yes: you still have one additional year to use if you need to repeat a year.

Thanks, Graeme

Negative !

Year 1 AHP Exception course studied, repeated 40 credits (year 1), academic failure, withdrawn, no qualification gained.

Withdrawn.

Join new uni, start same AHP Exception Course from Year 1.

Will it be full funding available from Year 1. Please confirm

**** side note: additional year would be available as a repeat year is needed in future - understood.

Sorry for the confusion here: I think we initially didn't realise that this course is an exception.

Rest assured, it absolutely is.

So, you'll be entitled to funding in all years, that's correct.

Thanks, Graeme
