Are you currently in year 13?
It might be worth doing a FAD course first - i.e. an Art foundation year at a local college rather than an integrated foundation year at university. The primary advantage being you don't pay to do a FAD course if you're <19 when you start i.e. if you go straight after A-levels. Often these years give you a chance to spend a year experimenting with media and building a stronger portfolio. It would give you a great chance to learn some animation and build those fundamental skills before you apply.

Some universities may accept you for anim without any experience, particularly if you had an otherwise strong portfolio, but you may struggle to get offers from the more competitive animation undergrad courses i.e. Hertfordshire. I'd also say it's a good idea to have a go before you go to uni, just to make sure you enjoy animating!

Hi @Lardball

I imagine this may depend on which university you go to as each course will be different on what they teach. It is a good idea to research course content in prospectuses or on course website pages to get an idea of what will be taught. Event better if you can go to open days and ask about what level of skill is best to have before you start.

However I did an foundation year and I believe they are beneficial in lots of ways. You may find this previous post I did useful Why study an art and design foundation (FAD) year? - The Student Room
It will definitely help you feel more prepared for university and give you a better chance if being accepted and therefore more university options.

I hope this help and if you have any questions feel free to ask
