Degree Clasification

Hi, I'm a UK-taught master’s student. I’m just under the Distinction threshold for my course. My average is less than 1% below distinction for the average of the "other modules" component of the course, while my primary module is comfortably in the distinction bracket. I also have approved extenuating circumstances this year, and the results are due to be ratified by the Board soon. Has anyone seen the board's average marks rounded up if they are less than 1% at a postgraduate taught (PGT) level? Or any real examples of asking for a remark?

Many thanks for any help

Award classifications and rounding are determined by the Examination Board in accordance with university regulations, and outcomes may vary from case to case. If you’re within a borderline range and have approved extenuating circumstances, the Board may consider this, but we can’t guarantee that marks will be rounded up.
We’d strongly recommend contacting your course administrator or Programme Director, who can confirm how borderline cases are applied for your course. If you believe a specific grade is incorrect, you can also request a review or clarification once results are released.
Hope this helps, and wishing you the best with your final classification.

The course has a specialism that carries most of the marks for the course and the other modules are averaged separately to that.

Ok.

So if that unit is comfortably a distinction and the average of your other modules is less than 1% below a distinction, then what's your combined average?

Hi there,

This usually differs between different universities so I would say that the best thing for you to do would be to contact your uni and see what they say their criteria for grades are. Sometimes they will upgrade you if you are a certain percentage below the threshold, sometimes there will be other criteria too such as getting a distinction in a certain number of modules, and sometimes they just won't upgrade you at all.

The best thing to do is ask one of your tutors or ask your academic advisor/personal tutor if you have one of these as they are the most likely to know this.

I hope this helps,

Lucy -SHU student ambassador.
