🧠 Admissions Mythbusting: what you really need to know

Applying to university can feel like navigating a maze; that’s why we’ve stepped in to bust some of the most common myths you may hear when applying. Here’s what you really need to know.

📄 Myth one: Your reference has to be perfect
Are you worried your teacher’s reference won’t be glowing enough? Don’t panic. Universities understand that references vary depending on your school and circumstances. What matters most is that it’s honest and gives context to your achievements. Universities will look at the whole application not just one paragraph.

📊 Myth two: Predicted grades are everything
Yes, predicted grades are important, but they’re not the only thing Admissions teams consider. Universities take a holistic view, looking at your personal statement, academic background, and potential. If your predicted grades are slightly below the entry requirements, don’t let that stop you from applying. If you don’t achieve the expected grades, Clearing is a great opportunity to explore alternative options.

📝 Myth three: Your personal statement must be packed with achievements
Achievements are great, but what universities really want is insight into your passion for the subject. We recommend focusing on why you’re interested in the course, what you’ve read or explored, and how your experiences have shaped your goals. It’s about depth, not just a list.

Myth four: You need to apply as early as possible
While early applications can be helpful, especially for competitive courses, it’s more important to submit a strong, well-prepared application. Rushing to meet an early deadline isn’t worth it if it means compromising on quality.

The equal consideration deadline for most UCAS application is 14 January 2026 (6pm UK time). This is the deadline to ensure your application is considered equally against all others received by the same date.

Don’t forget that some courses, such as medicine, dentistry, and veterinary medicine/science have an earlier deadline of Wednesday 15 October 2025.

🎓 Myth five: You won’t get in if you don’t meet every requirement
Entry requirements are a guide, not a guarantee. Most universities consider the full picture, including contextual information, your school background, and any challenges you’ve faced. If you’re passionate about the course and meet most of the criteria, it’s worth applying.

Some of this advice is incorrect and highly misleading.

'Myth 4' - you must apply before the relevant UCAS deadline, typically 14 January, to be certain that your application will be considered. The idea that you can 'take your time' and ignore deadline is therefore entirely incorrect.

'Myth 5' - "Entry requirements are a guide" - no they are not. They are the minimum entry requirements and for many courses they are a rigid requirement, not just 'nice to have'. It is not enough to meet 'most of the requirements' - if you are not taking the required A level subjects or dont have the specific GCSE grades you will get an immediate rejection.
