ok guys this is a bit of a long one but I’ve been stressing so much, I hope anyone with any knowledge in this area might be able to help!
I missed my Oxford offer for medicine this august and I am resitting my a levels and reapplying for medicine, including applying to Oxford again, as a home non-contextual applicant.
I missed the offer this summer due to extenuating circumstances (young caring responsibilities for my sibling and undiagnosed health issues). I got diagnosed around results day and resat my ucat exam after getting my a level results, but my ucat this year was affected by my extenuating circumstances too (mostly getting treatment for my condition). Both of my extenuating circumstances are resolved now, so it affected the lead up to and during my a levels, as well as my ucat this year.
Obviously I am already at a disadvantage as a resit and replicant for Oxford, but the fact that I underperformed this year in ucat (getting around 85th percentile compared to my 99th percentile score last year) makes it even worse. 85th percentile isn’t enough to get automatically shortlisted via the algorithm so I know im definitely under the algorithmic shortlisting cutoff (50:50 ucat and gcse). I come from a high performing school as well so I don’t get any contextual uplift.
My teacher has written on my reference my extenuating circumstances, as well as my previous Oxford offer and my previous high ucat score of 99th percentile to show the underperformance this year.
My stats previously were (home non-contextual):
1) A*A*A* in bio chem pysch
2) A* (50/50) in my epq (ipsc and parkinsons related)
3) 99th percentile ucat (near 3300)
4) 10 a*s at gcse (8x grade 9s 2x grade 8s)
This years stats (home non-contextual):
1) same gcses
2) A*A*A prediction from my school in bio chem and pysch
3) A* (50/50) achieved in epq
4) much lower 85th percentile ucat this year
1) Does it put me at a disadvantage that I reapplied to the same college? I’ve seen other threads on here where people who missed their offer and reapplied to a different college ended up getting offers again… I applied to the same college but I found out recently that apparently colleges don’t recommend reapplying to the same college that previously gave you an offer, in case of potential bias. I applied to the same college that gave me my offer as I thought they would be more familiar with my application, since they knew about my mitigating circumstances during a levels as I sent in an explanation form before results day… but now im worried that I should’ve applied to a different college this year.
2) every year Oxford has some interview places for applicants who didn’t make the algorithmic shortlisting cutoff but are interviewed after manual review of their entire application e.g lower gcses or lower ucat score… This is usually for applicants with extenuating circumstances, contextual factors e.g socioeconomic disadvantages and/or went to a low performing school. Last year there were 81 applicants who were invited to interview after being manually reviewed, since during the initial algorithm shortlisting, the two main factors seen are ucat and gcse.
I know my only chance of getting an interview now is through this group, as with my ucat, I definitely wouldn’t be in the algorithm-selected group. I’m just really worried that I won’t be strong enough to be included in this group of ~80 to be invited to interview!
My previous Oxford offer, my previous 99th percentile ucat score and my mitigating circumstances explained on my teachers reference would help, mentioned by my teacher, but my resit status and my current ucat score would really put me at a disadvantage!
Sorry for the super long message and if anyone’s read up to here, thanks for your time! It’s been a really rough year so would really appreciate any help!
