Masters or placement year on a biochemistry course? what will be more beneficial?

Hi @ameliafitzy

I would say it depends on what you want to get out of your degree. If you are thinking about going into work after graduating, doing a placement year would be really helpful for building experience and connections. If you're thinking of going into academia or research, doing a master's could be really helpful for building skills in researching and self-driven learning. However, both options really set you up well for both working and further study, so if you're still struggling to choose, I would think about whether you want to do a year working or another year studying instead. There are pros and cons to each, and you can always switch, even after you've started your degree!

I hope this helps, please let me know if you have any further questions!

Hi!
I’m currently on an integrated masters biochem degree. The main difference is that for a placement year you can do pretty much any field or type of placement, whereas for masters it must be science and research related, limiting your options a little. Also for masters you will most likely have to pay the full tuition fees during the last year, while these will probably be lowered during the placement year.
But as others have said, you can always switch between them after talking to advisors at the uni.
For me, I chose integrated masters as I thought if I’m doing an extra year, I may as well get a higher qualification for it!
