Paramedic Science / Cornwall

Hello, I'm considering studying Paramedic Science as a mature student. I currently live in west Cornwall (so about 1hr 45min drive) with my wife and daughter. I wondered if doing this without moving to Plymouth full time would be possible? Does anyone have any experience of that? Would the schedule allow to stay up there maybe two nights a week?
Any advice welcome. Thanks in advance!

Hi @VicVinegar82

Are you looking at the 3 year undergraduate course?

I’m not at Plymouth, but i study Paramedic Science at BCU and i believe the general set up is quite similar across universities, so hopefully this helps.

It may be possible to commute part of the week but it really depends on how Plymouth structures their timetable and this could be quite tough long-term. The course tends to be very full-on with early starts, 12 hour placement shifts, and face-to-face practical sessions. In my first year i could be in anywhere from 3-5 days a week usually. These could also be on random days of the week which may make the commute tricky.

I know of a few people who have managed by renting a room closer to uni or staying with friends for a couple of nights, and then heading home on days off.

A few things to consider:

Placements (BCU policy is that your placements can be within an hours drive of your term time address, so it may be worth checking if Plymouth has a similar policy)

Uni days (Typically in first year, you will have quite a lot of lecture time, meaning that you may have to stay for more than 2 nights)

It’s definitely doable for some people, especially with good family support and flexible travel plans. I would definitely recommend speaking to Plymouths admissions team to see if they can advise you on this, and possibly give you a better idea of the schedule for placements and campus days.

Hope this helps, and let me know if you have any other questions

Hey, what I know about paramedic science courses, they usually involve a mix of university teaching and practical placement. Many lectures and labs are schedules full time, and placements can be scheduled for weeks. Staying in west cornwall and just commuting or staying a couple of nights a week might be tricky because of travel times and the practical placement requirements, but it could depend on the specific timetable. Please email the relevant academic team to discuss more in depth.
