A-Level subjects (URGENT REPLY NEEDED) (PLEASE HELP)

I have just started year 12 and I am currently studying A-Level mathematics, physics & geography. I want to do Mechanical Engineering (MEng), possibly with an industrial placement year in Russell group university. I requested to do A-Level further maths, & I had a strong desire to do it. However, I was warned it is an intense subject, which could impact my overall A-level grade, which can affect my UCAS application for year 13. Sadly, I decided to quit the idea of further maths. Soon, I plan to self-study A-level year 1 further maths. Also, I am aiming for A*/A in my current A-Levels to get accepted for this degree. Please, tell me if there is a chance I can get accepted to do the degree?
Is it possible to get accepted by UCL & Imperial?

Imperial entry requirements: https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/mechanical-engineering/
A*A*A with 3 A-levels, with A*s required in Maths and Physics, but the third course can be anything.
UCL A*AA with A* in maths or physics.
So yeah, provided you get A*s in maths and/or physics you could get accepted by UCL & Imperial

first of all, please don't worry as there are people who do engineering at russel group unis without further maths; you're going to be absolutely fine!

i wonder if you could ask your school about taking further maths up after half term - i'm sure that you could catch up on the work if this was something you were keen to do. perhaps if you could demonstrate that you caught up with the work, and tell them that you'll be self-studying the subject regardless, you could convince them? if not, and you end up self-studying further maths (which i think is a really good alternative), you should probably have a look into the amsp as they help support students with this

even if you don't end up sitting the exams, it's such an asset to have the skills from further maths, going into such a mathematical degree as engineering. i know you're probably more worried about getting into uni, but admissions aside, learning further maths makes the transition to engineering much smoother. my further maths teacher actually ended up having a student who didn't take further maths coming into school during his year 13 summer to learn the content ready for uni. all of this is to say that, while at least an AS level would be good from an admissions perspective, even if you didn't sit an actual qualification in further maths, it's worth learning the content anyway for your own personal benefit

i'd be more than happy to help you on the way (i'm a year 13 further maths student!) and hope this ends up working out for you

Just be aware that many top Unis will expect you to be taking FM for Mech etc if your school offers it and will, if not, require your referee to state that the school does not offer it so you couldn't take it. And the other thing you do need to think about is that if you find Maths difficult is Mech at a top Uni really the best option? There are Mech courses at less competitive Unis where there will not be the same competitive academic pressure.

Thanks for that. What if I self-study A-level year 1 further maths in my situation?
Do I have a chance to still get accepted?

I don't understand why you can't doit at school if your school offers it?

Check the entry requirement's for uni's you want to apply for.
I believe most don't strictly require further math's alevel.

However, some uni's reccomend it. And for some uni's even taking just AS further maths can lower your entry requirements.

But definitely possible to get into a good uni without it, and many do. (But if you're capable, further maths might make it more likely).

Also don't look at just Russel Group universities.
For example Bath is ranked about top 5 for Mechanical engineering, and is not a russel group uni.

Are you going to complete the full A-level? You could just self-study y1 fm for your own learning but how would the University see that or how will you prove it to them? and that still wouldn't equal a full A-level which is sort of what the university expects if the school offers it.
Literally at the bottom paragraph of your reference your teacher would write something along the words of "further maths is offered to a select number of students...." mine even mentioned it offers further maths gcse! You still have a chance if you don't have further maths but realistically you want to do Mech Eng at the best universities wouldn't that be ever more difficult than further maths. I would recommend have a look at the spec and some questions, if you feel like you would be able to do it, then catch up and prepare to sit the further maths a level.
