Submitted essay

Hey guys I am submitting a essay to turnitin and 2200 word and it flagged my cover sheet and references list but the essay it self it didn’t highlight anything and I am worried that my professor thinks I used AI

Hi there,

You can expect for any essay overall to have at least a proportion of similarity purely because of reference lists. This is perfectly normal. There is an expectation that reference lists will be heavily similar on Turnitin because of the way they're written and that works on the same topic are likely to use similar references. So long as your essay body is not flagged I honestly think you will be fine. I would be very surprised if your lecturers would accuse you of using AI if you have genuinely written it all yourself and found all of your own references.

Hoping this helps! 🙂

Hi @Dgbjvfg 👋

Don't worry about this much. If you have not used AI, it is fine but sometimes the work gets detected based on similarity anyway and lecturers are mindful of this so it will not be a problem. We are told not to even bother checking the similarity score since it is not as accurate as it claims to be so do not worry!

Hey,

Hey, try not to stress too much, what you’re describing actually happens quite a lot with Turnitin. The system often flags sections like cover sheets, titles, and reference lists because those parts tend to include common phrases or formatting that match other submissions. For example, if your university provides a standard cover sheet template or if your references are written in the same citation style as everyone else’s, Turnitin can easily pick that up as a match.

The key thing here is that your actual essay content wasn’t flagged, which is what really matters. Turnitin’s AI and similarity tools aren’t perfect, they don’t necessarily mean you’ve done anything wrong. In fact, a lot of professors know that cover pages and references can inflate the similarity score or trigger false positives, so they usually focus on the body of the work when reviewing reports.

If you’re still worried, it might be a good idea to send a quick, polite email to your lecturer or module leader explaining that the flagged parts were only your cover sheet and reference list, and that the essay itself came back clear. Being transparent shows, you’re acting in good faith, and most tutors will appreciate that.

You’ve done the right thing by checking the report and making sure your essay is fine, and from what you’ve said, there’s really no reason for your professor to think you used AI. Try to relax; these systems flag formatting overlaps all the time, and it doesn’t reflect badly on your work at all.

Good luck 😊

Hi there,

Turnitin tends to always flag reference lists and cover sheets, as they are the same for lots of people.
If you are scared of being accused of using AI, the best protection against it is saving intermediate versions of you essay. So you would be able to show how you worked on it, and what changes you were making. However, in your specific case I do not think you should worry
