MSC OT at London South bank university (LSBU)

Hello, I was wondering if anyone knows what the timetable is like for the MSc OT course at LSBU? In addition does anyone know how many and how long the placements are? I assume placements for LSBU cover all of London, so are quite varied?

Contact the department and ask for a copy of this year's timetable. Are there any open days scheduled that you could attend to ask these questions?

Hi there,

That’s a really good question, and one that comes up a lot for students considering the MSc Occupational Therapy (Pre-Registration) course at London South Bank University (LSBU). The course is an intensive, full-time, two-year programme, designed for graduates who want to qualify as occupational therapists. It’s accredited by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and approved by the Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT), meaning that once you graduate, you’ll be eligible to register and practise professionally in the UK.

In terms of structure, the MSc runs for around 90 weeks in total (excluding holidays). The timetable varies depending on the semester, but as it’s an accelerated course, you can expect a busy schedule with several days a week of lectures, practical workshops, and group sessions, often between 9am and 5pm. During non-placement periods, there’s also an expectation of independent study outside of class hours. LSBU is very open about the fact that this course is intensive, so good organisation and time management are key.

Placements form a major part of the programme and are essential for developing practical skills. MSc students complete four full-time practice placements spread across the two years. These are designed to give you a broad range of experiences in different settings, for example, NHS hospitals, community services, mental health units, and independent practice environments. While the exact duration of each placement can vary, they typically run for several weeks at a time and are full-time, giving you real-world, hands-on experience.

As LSBU partners with a large number of healthcare providers across London and the surrounding areas, placement locations are very varied. You could be placed in different boroughs or trusts around the city, depending on where learning opportunities are available. Some placements may involve a bit of travel, but this also means you’ll gain experience in a wide range of clinical and community environments, which is one of the strengths of studying in London.

If you want to find out more, I’d highly recommend attending our Open Day on Saturday, 15th November, where you can meet current OT students and lecturers who can share detailed information about the timetable, placements, and what a typical week looks like on the course.

Overall, the MSc Occupational Therapy course at LSBU is a fast-paced but incredibly rewarding route into the profession, offering strong clinical experience and excellent preparation for your future career.
