I’m going into fourth year next year my last year. I want to live away, I do not know where to start. I want a shared flat - but don’t know anyone enough to ask - and preferably as cheap as possible

Hi there!

There are lots of different options for moving out. You could:

Look on social media and see if there are any rooms available in shared houses or flats. Sometimes people will advertise that they have a spare room, or if they want an extra person to look for a house with! These are quite often on Facebook so it's worth a try.

See if you can get a room in your student halls! There might be some rooms available so contact your housing office and see if they usually have rooms for students who aren't in first year. Usually first years get priority but there may still be room for other years if you ask them.

Have a look at private halls too as there may be rooms in some of these and usually these are for students in any year!

I hope some of this helps,

Hi @Lolakopyygg,

When I was a student, I lived in university accommodation during first year, then during second I went into private halls and then during placement and final year, I moved into a 3 bed flat with friends I made at my other accommodation. Here's some of my suggestions 🙂

Look on socials- there are many Facebook groups or posts about people looking for an extra person or just advertising their house shares and so on. You could also post in them to ask if anyone has any rooms available.

Private halls- there are many university owned halls but also private ones that you would share with people or even studios which aren't too pricey sometimes.

Estate agents- Look on right move for example, they often advertise house shares and student accommodation on there too. This is how we found out flat in final year.

Hope this helps,
^Zac

Thanks helps a lot! By the way are student halls cheaper ?

Hi,
It can vary, but most student halls tend to run on a 39–41 week contract.
From my experience, the total cost for that period often works out about the same as renting a student house for a full year.

Depends where you are, and what quality of housing you're looking at. Rent at my uni halls were dirt cheap, but at other places it may not be so. Private halls are much more expensive though, possibly even more than privately renting a place. But it all depends. You're going to need to have a look around at prices for different things and see what works out for you. Good advice on where to look for places to live above, I'd also just add to the list the spareroom website.

Hiya @Lolakopyygg ,
It's great that you are looking to move out with a group of friends and rent privately 😚 You can check out platforms like OpenRent, SpareRoom or RightMove to search nearby properties and filter according to your budget.

You might also want to ask some of your seniors who have graduated, as they might be able to recommend a good house and refer you to the landlord.

Do you know the number of people you are living with? It would be good to settle that first and discuss what is within your budget and preferences 🤗
I hope this helps and I wish you the best of luck in your house hunting!

It takes a couple of weeks to process if you're changing it for this year, or it takes about the same time as a regular SFE application if you're applying for the next academic year. What they'll give you is dependant on many of your personal and famly details, none of which are too wise to post on the Internet so do have a look at the SFE website to guesstimate yourself how much you'll be getting.

Hi there,

There are generally 2 options when it comes to student accommodation. It can be either a university-owned halls or a private provider. University managed halls are usually cheaper and you can find all the information about them on the university's website. You can find out more about private providers here: Best companies in Student Accommodation Centre on Trustpilot or sometimes universities might have partners which they advertise on their website as well. For example, you can see how it looks on our website: Student accommodation at De Montfort University

Hi,

I’d recommend checking your university’s accommodation page for available student halls, as well as looking online at private halls and social media housing groups where students often post about spare rooms or look for flatmates. It’s also a good idea to book in-person/virtual viewings, just to make sure it’s the right fit for you.

As for student finance, you’ll be able to apply through Student Finance England (SFE). The amount you receive will depend on factors such as your household income, whether you’re living at home or away, and the length of your course. You can check the SFE website for the most up-to-date information and eligibility details.

Hope this helps,

Hi @Lolakopyygg 👋

Hope you are well. There are plenty of options and for reasonable prices but you will have to look thoroughly. For uni halls, you can look into shared flats and apply for accomodation with your university. For private accomodation you can look into off campus choices online and see if there are any choices. On facebook university pages, people tend to advertise for flatmates as well. Uni group chats also advertise accomodations or needing flatmate situations so have a look on there and i am sure you will find a great place 😊
