Cyber security dissertation

Hi, I am an undergraduate student starting my dissertation in Cyber security. I am interested in Cryptography. I am feeling overwhelmed and am struggling to start my project. Where should I look for resources on this topic. Any other tips for the dissertation would also be helpful. Thank you

Hey,

Feeling overwhelmed at the start of your dissertation is completely normal, especially when you’re dealing with something technical. The key is to start small and gradually build your understanding and structure before worrying about the full scope of the project.

For resources, your first stop should be your university library’s online database. Look for journals like IEEE or Springer Nature. These often have recent papers on encryption algorithms, key methods, or emerging topics. They are also very reputable journals, Google Scholar is also excellent for discovering papers. When you find a good one, use the reference list to find related research, it’s one of the fastest ways to build a reading trail.

If you’re struggling to choose a specific angle, focus on a narrower problem, such as analysing the security of a particular encryption method or evaluating a lightweight cryptographic protocol for IoT devices. Cryptography is vast, so defining your scope early will make your life much easier.

Finally, keep your supervisor involved from the start. They’ll be able to suggest whether your proposed direction is feasible and help you shape a clear research question. Breaking your dissertation down into smaller milestones, like completing a literature review by a set date, or building a prototype by another, can also stop the project from feeling unmanageable.

Dissertations can be challenging, but they’re also some of the most rewarding if you pace yourself and engage deeply early on.

Good luck 😊
