Hi,
I'm Aura, a rep from the Uni of Staffs studying Computer Science.
I did my A-levels during COVID and sat my exams. I was consistently getting lower grades in class exams until about the last couple months of my A-levels. I sat down and decided enough was enough, annotating everything I needed to do to get the grades I wanted. I went from Cs in class practice tests to A*AA in my final exams. It was not easy but sticking to a routine helps. Here's some stuff I did for my subjects. Hopefully some are applicable to you or anyone else reading this!
Mathematics
Past papers and topic tests were the highlight of my studies. I did the textbook work from front till end then printed paper after paper (Solomon Worksheets were a life saver) for each topic until I was sick of them. Papers are not made to look like textbook questions, so practicing paper-style questions is your go-to. In my exams at least 4 questions were in a similar style to what I did in these practice tests, all being 5+ markers. If you do not understand a topic, please revise it as it most likely will come up, from my experience at least! Mechanics was my enemy, so revising it felt like a chore but it worked out in the end. I found a love for Pure and Statistics during. For the mechanics side please learn the keywords as they each carry a meaning in the questions. Statistics is highly formula based, pure combines both.
Physics
Reading is your superpower. Read the textbooks, read online booklets, watch YouTube videos (Nutshell Physics, Launchpad Learning, Science Shorts etc.). You need to be able to revise core theories like the back of your hand. Most reasoning questions will give you marks simply by stating them. Practice tricky calculations and learn as many formulas as you can. I used flashcards to remember definitions and formulas and had my friends test me until I could say them word for word. Sticking them where you often look too can help as they could be the first thing you see in the morning. Even a bus ride is the perfect time to whip out a flashcard!
Computer Science
My course consisted of a project and exam. For the exam, I revised core reasoning from past papers and YouTube videos from Craig and Dave. I spent most of my time on the project, documenting every little element of it until it was all there. Screenshots, test cases, similar research, variables to be used, designs, you name it. 68 pages worth of reading, code and tables. The examiners likely hated me but it secured an A*.
Overall focus the most time on your least strongest subject, put away any distractions like phones and where possible, study with someone to ensure you keep at it. I'd put on music in sixth-form and study away for half an hour bursts, taking stretches ever so often and snacks. Do not burn yourself out! Get your rest, eat healthy and ask your teachers for additional support where it's needed. You are not just your grades, you're a person and you will go far!
I hope this was useful, looking forward to hearing what other tips students have for their past subjects.
