Help, how would funding work if I change from a non-AHP course to an AHP course

I have a question related to student finance, I'm currently a second year student in Biochemistry and I was planning to switch into Physiotherapy mainly due to mental health.

My university gave me a few options related to the course but in terms of finance they told me to discuss it with student finance. I was wondering how my choice will affect my SFE, I initially planned in withdrawing now in my first semester and taking a break but my parents are against that, so my current option is to stay for the rest of the second year while receiving mental health support from my university then applying for Physiotherapy at the end of second year.

My question is will student finance cover all my 3 years of Physiotherapy or will it only cover 1 year since I'm technically doing 2 years of Biochemistry.

Thank you

Hi there,

To confirm then you will have studied for 2 years prior to starting your new course? Can you confirm you will be starting the new course in the 2026/27 academic year? What university will you attend for the new physiotherapy course and how many years does the course last?

Thanks, Drew

Hello,

Yes I will have completed 2 years of my 4 year Biochemistry course by then. I will be starting my new course by 2026/2027 at the same university, Northumbria university, Physiotherapy is only 3 years long.

Thank you

Hi there,

This course is classed as an exception course so we would not take any of your previous study into consideration when assessing your entitlement. You would get full funding for the Tuition Fee Loan, Maintenance Loan and Supplementary Grants if applicable to you. You would get 3 years of funding plus 1 additional year of funding if you had to resit a year.

Thanks, Drew
