dropping out of uni to do hair

I am studying biology and I really hate it, and I really want to do hair. I want to do a level 2 in hairdressing but not sure if that is the right route?

Hello,

If you want to get into hairdressing then it is correct, level 2 is where you start and then you can advance to level 3 hairdressing. Alternatively you can do an apprenticeship of both level 2 and 3 and get paid while doing it (though minimal pay but it’s still something).

All the best in your future 😊

Hi there 👋

Sorry to hear you aren't enjoying your course! It's great that you've already acknowledged you're unhappy and know what you'd like to study instead.

I'd recommend speaking to your universities support team. Even if you feel like you've already made your decision, they'll be able to provide some advice on withdrawing from your degree and where to begin with starting a Level 2 hairdressing course. It's good to talk through your options with someone outside of your immediate family and friendship group, they will be able to give some unbiased advice on your situation. Your university will want the best for you, and if this is withdrawing from your Biology degree then they'll help you through the process!

This is the correct route into hairdressing, and it would require you to likely go back to college to gain your qualification. Most vocational colleges will offer this so have a look at your options locally and start to go from there. Alternatively, you could look into a hairdressing apprenticeship. This will allow you to have a more practical, hands-on experience outside of the classroom whilst getting paid. Even though it will only be an apprenticeship wage, it may still appeal to you more knowing you're supported by a business and receiving a wage whilst gaining your qualification.

I'd suggest writing a pros and cons list for carrying on with your degree or dropping out and beginning a hairdressing course. You could then make another one to determine if you want to study the level 2 qualification at college or find an apprenticeship. Writing a pros and cons list always helps me to visualise my thoughts and ultimately think clearer.

Best of luck making your decision, and remember to do what feels right for you!
^Hannah 😊
