LJMU but living at home?

Anyone here studying at LJMU and living at home? 😊 How did you find making friends and getting involved? Any advice for balancing uni life with home life as a commuter student?

Hi there!

I am not a commuter myself, so maybe another LJMU rep can add a second response, but I have a lot of friends from the local area that commute for uni. They're from a range of places including Liverpool itself, Warrington, Runcorn, Wirral and also Chester!

My advice for you for making friends stems from the ways I met them as commuters (if that makes sense) so hopefully you'll find this helpful regardless!

Come into uni for the whole day if possible - not just for classes

If you're commuting into town for uni anyway, you may as well stay the whole day! - this allows you to separate your uni life from your home life

If you stay at uni for the majority of the day (9-4/5) then you can also spend more time with classmates and join them in the library for study sessions, grab lunch in town etc

This gives you time to see your coursemates socially rather than just in lectures or practicals

As well, treating uni like a 9-5 builds good working habits and usually means you won't have to do as much work once you get home, allowing you to switch off on evenings and weekends, as well as spending more time with your family

Join some societies

The easiest way to make friends is by joining a society or sports team - that way you'll meet people with the same interests!

Societies usually run at least one event a week or more - you don't have to go to all of these, so it can be more flexible around your schedule, so you can pick and choose when you go vs when you have to be home

Sports teams usually require more commitment, for training sessions as well as matches so this would take more planning around when you have to be at home/how often you can commit to the team

Consider getting a job on-campus

If work is the reason you may have to spend more time at home/less time on campus, see if you can get a bit of work on campus

LJMU has it's own jobs agency, Unitemps, that are based at the SLB - they have a range of jobs pop up at different points of the year that is definitely worth looking into

I've actually met a few good friends when being put on shifts together all the time!

Here is the link for unitemps for you to look at - if there isn't much there at the moment, then keep checking because opportunities are constantly getting added:

Go to uni events

LJMU and JMSU hold lots of events throughout the year to go to and meet other students

Next week specifically, JMSU are holding a different event each day for reading week if you want to get involved and go check them out!

Hopefully this gives you a few pointers, and maybe an LJMU commuter student could reply with their personal experiences?

Hiya,
Joining a society is one of the easiest ways to start meeting new people from outside of your course and faculty 🤗! If you are not too sure about committing, you can always try joining one off student union or society fundraising events.
It is a great way to build a weekly social routine where you get to meet the same group of people on a regular basis 🙂.
