Career Choice Discussion HELP

I’ll get right to the point, I have no clue where i’m headed in life. I did okay in my GCSES 987666665 (9 In Computer Science)

I’m a first year A Level Student however i’m at a point where I think I dug a hole for myself, I only got a 6 in maths ( couple marks off a 7) so I couldn’t take maths I do Computer Science, Economics and Philosophy, but without maths it’s as if my career path is completely ruined.

I don’t know what to do anymore, without maths A Level i’m shut out from going to russel group/Oxbridge as I want to become a software engineer as I really enjoy programming and maths but I can’t do that unless I go to a lower ranked university such as UoSussex

I just really need some guidance on what to do as I’ve been stressing so much lately, it feels like I just have to try my hardest to get an apprenticeship , not being able to take maths has really messed up my plans.

Could you resit Maths gcse or do Maths alevel as a private candidate? May be speak to your head of year and see if you still are able to join the maths class, just explain what you want to do as a career and see how school can support you. Alternatively you could also as you said go for an apprenticeship, which would mean missing university but you would also be able to become a software engineer.

It’s half term right now so my head of year isn’t checking emails but once we come back i’ll talk to him and see if there’s anything I can do in terms of maths for my future.

Just be aware that there is nothing 'magic' about Russell Group Universities - whatever your school tries to tell you. They are not intrinsically 'better' that other Unis, however you think you can measure that, and they do not guarantee you an amazing career or a happy life. It certainly doesnt mean that you will enjoy the course any more or even like being at that Uni.

Feeling like you are not keeping-up with everyone else can be very demoralising. With slightly lower Maths ability, a Uni like Sussex would be a very good match. Solidly academic but not as pressured as being at an AAA Uni. It might surprise you that employers are not as obsessed with RG as school-leavers - they dont rank job applications by Uni, and instead they look for degree result, relevant experience (degree with work placement, or any other relevant stuff you have done around your degree). You will not be at any obvious disadvantage with a degree from Sussex or any other sensible Uni. Apply.
