Life as a PG student' - how to manage study/work/social life

Finding my balance: a postgraduate journey at LSBU

Life as a postgraduate student at LSBU is all about balance, growth, and discovering what you’re really capable of. There is a big community of people juggling work, study, and life, all pushing toward their next goal. I finished my undergraduate degree here at LSBU and absolutely loved it, especially the research side of my course. That is what made me want to stay on and continue my journey as a postgraduate student in Food Science. The support I had from my lecturers during my undergrad made the decision easy. They really encouraged my curiosity and helped me realise how much I enjoyed research and hands-on learning.

As a PG student, I’ve found that setting a routine helps, like dedicating certain evenings to coursework and keeping weekends free for downtime or exploring London. LSBU makes it easier with flexible study options, late library hours, and plenty of support along the way.

The LSBU Hub (https://www.lsbu.ac.uk/about-us/the-hub) is honestly one of my favourite spaces on campus. You can find your own spot to work quietly without feeling like you’re in anyone’s way. There are bookable group study rooms you can reserve for up to two hours a day and they’re soundproof, so if you and your friends need to play some music while working, you totally can! The library support team are always around to help you find resources, and there’s access to thousands of books and journals online through the LSBU Library site. You can also borrow laptops, and there are loads of PCs and Macs available for use across the Hub and printing is super affordable too.

Postgraduate study can feel intense at times, but LSBU has your back. Between your tutors, the wellbeing team, and the community around you, there’s always someone ready to help or cheer you on. You’re surrounded by talented, ambitious, down-to-earth people who are all working hard to achieve something meaningful - and that makes the experience even more rewarding.

How to manage it all:

Here are some easy ways to stay on top of everything while still enjoying the PG journey:

1.

1. Plan your week Use Google Calendar or Outlook to block out time for lectures, study sessions, work, and breaks. This helps you stay organised and avoids last-minute stress.

2.

2. Use LSBU’s resources Make the most of the online library where you can access thousands of journals and e-books anytime.

3.

3. Set small, realistic goals Breaking assignments into smaller chunks makes them way less overwhelming. Focus on completing one section or task at a time.

4.

4. Find your best study rhythm Some people focus better early in the morning or others at night. Experiment a little until you figure out when you’re most productive.

5.

5. Try helpful study apps Grammarly helps with writing or RefWorks makes referencing a breeze. Pomodoro timer apps can also help you study in short, focused bursts.

6.

6. Make time for people Even when things get busy, catching up with a friend for coffee at the Hub or a walk through Elephant Park can do wonders for your mental reset.

7.

7. Protect your downtime Whether it’s Netflix, exploring new parts of London, or just doing nothing for a bit, giving yourself breaks helps you stay motivated in the long run.
