My experience at LSBU

My journey at LSBU is honestly one of the best experiences of my life so far. I started at the National Bakery School (oldest bakery school in the world) studying Baking Science and Technology Management (https://www.lsbu.ac.uk/study/course-finder/bsc-hons-baking-science-and-technology), and what began as a hobby grew into a passion and career in food science. From my first day, I’ve always felt supported, encouraged, and part of a community that genuinely wants you to succeed.

The support at LSBU is amazing and the staff are so talented and genuinely care about each student. They take the time to listen, help you work through challenges, and always push you to do your best. I love how approachable my lecturers and supervisors are. They’re professionals in their fields but still make you feel comfortable asking questions or sharing ideas. Whether it’s advice about coursework, career goals, or research projects, they’re always happy to help. Thanks to their encouragement, I’ve been able to volunteer and take part in competitions internally which have helped me grow my confidence and creativity.

There’s also always something happening on campus, and opportunities are everywhere if you’re willing to get involved. I work as a student ambassador with the Admissions and Outreach teams, which means I help out at Open Days (https://www.lsbu.ac.uk/study/study-at-lsbu/open-days), support school visits and HE fairs, and sometimes even help with content and events. It’s such a fun role and has honestly shaped me into who I am today. It’s helped me become more confident, organised, and comfortable speaking to people from all walks of life. Plus, I’ve met so many amazing people through it - students, staff, and so many prospective students who remind me why I love LSBU so much.

LSBU’s location makes student life even better. Being in the heart of London means everything is right at your doorstep - food spots, cafés, parks, and so many places to explore after lectures. Getting around is super easy too, with train and tube stations just a few minutes away. I love being able to finish a day of studying and head out for food at Borough Market or take a walk along the South Bank to unwind.

As a Food Science PhD (https://www.lsbu.ac.uk/study/course-finder/food-sciences-phd) student, I still get that same feeling of belonging and excitement I had in my first year. LSBU gives me the support, confidence, and freedom to do what I love and to them I am very grateful. The people here, opportunities, and the sense of community continue to shape me into a better version of myself every day. Looking back, choosing LSBU was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It’s where my hobby became my career, where I found confidence in my abilities, and where I discovered a love for research that continues to grow every day.

My tip to you…

If you’re reading this and wondering whether LSBU is for you, honestly, just go for it. There is a course for everyone! Get involved, join societies, make memories, and push yourself a little out of your comfort zone. You’ll meet incredible people, gain real experience, and feel like you truly belong here.

And the perks? There are loads. You’re studying in the heart of London, surrounded by amazing food spots, parks, and culture. You get access to 24-hour study spaces (the Hub), laptop loans, and proper support whenever you need it. Plus, there are student discounts everywhere - coffee, travel, bubble tea, you name it. The best part though is the vibe. Everyone’s friendly, down-to-earth, and always up for helping each other out.
