I've experienced some mental down-periods this year, and so, about six months ago, I decided to get a bike, and managed to get one 50% off.
After only a couple of weeks of regular riding, I noticed a big change in my energy levels, which was nice, but, as a Muslim woman, there are some caveats to riding alone in the area in which I live.
When I rode, I would pull up my abaya to my knees whilst wearing loose trousers underneath. I would also wear my hood, so that my hijab is covered, and so that the likelihood of harassment is less likely. I've gotten a couple of sneers and a few weird noises, which isn't much, but it definitely ruins the vibe of the ride, and what's supposed to be a stress-relieving activity was actually a period of heightened anxiety for me. So I stopped.
I know that there's a bicycle group called Cycle Sisters, but their closest groups are in Hackney and Tower Hamlets, quite a bit of distance from the area I live in. Any other Muslim girls in the area experiencing similar problems and willing to come together to ride a little more safely and stress-free?
-Thanks!
P.s. is this the right forum...?
