Hi @danielshields17 That’s a great question and honestly, you’re not alone in feeling that way. 😊

Here’s a quick breakdown that might help you decide 👇

Mechanical Engineering This is the most flexible route. It gives you a solid foundation in core engineering principles (like mechanics, materials, and thermodynamics), and from there you can move into automotive, aerospace, or even motorsport. It’s also really well recognised by employers.

Automotive Engineering Great if you’re passionate about cars and vehicle systems. It’s more focused than mechanical, but still broad enough to keep your career options open.

Aerospace Engineering Perfect if you love aircraft, aerodynamics, and space tech. There’s lots of overlap with mechanical too, so it’s not as narrow as it sounds.

Motorsport Engineering The most specialised of the four. Amazing if you’re set on F1 or racing, but it can limit your options outside that field. Many people actually start with mechanical or automotive, then specialise in motorsport later.

If you’re still deciding, I’d personally go for Mechanical Engineering it keeps all doors open, and you can always focus on your passion (cars, planes, or motorsport) later through your projects or postgraduate study. But that's totally on you to decide.

Look at Brookes - brand new facilities which opened this year. Their F1 course is the original and the best.

They offer Automotive + Electric vehicles - not sensible to just do auto these days

They also do really well at Formula Student so you could join that activity and do one of the other degrees?

Coventry and Oxford Brookes are together the top UK Unis for anything to do with Motorsport.
Don't wimp-out - apply for the course you really want.
