Applying for student finance as an independent student

Hi guys,

I was planning on studying midwifery in Uni next year, and was looking into applying for student finance. Im 21 years old, however I've been supporting myself for over 3 years and i also had a baby this year, so I believe i would be classified as an independent student. My boyfriend’s mom offered us to move in with her and his sister, so that we can bring the costs down and have some extra help around the baby while im at uni. We will have to pay our share of rent/bills but it will be much less than if we lived on our own.

Im a bit concerned that student finance will ask me to provide everyone’s income details, and that it will affect my maintenance grand. I will be financially supported only by my boyfriend not his family. Has anyone been in a similar situation and can give me some advice on this?

Hi there,

As you have a child you will be classed as an independent student and will not need to provide anyone else's details as you are not married to your boyfriend. You will need to provide evidence of your child.

Thanks, Drew
