Higher Choices - Need Advice!

Hi everyone,

I’m picking my Higher subjects soon and I’m really stuck on what to choose.

Currently, I’m doing National 5 Maths, English, Business Management, Computer Science, Modern Studies, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

At first, I planned to take these for Higher:
Maths, Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, and Business Management.

However, after a careers interview with my guidance teacher, she suggested I take Biology instead of Business. She said that not taking Biology alongside Chemistry might close some doors for me in the future.

The careers I’m interested in include Digital Forensics, Software Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Forensic Science.
I’ve never really been interested in Medicine.

I wanted to take Business because I find it really easy at Nat 5. I’m not super interested in it, but I do run a small business, so I thought it might be useful in the future.

On the other hand, I really don’t want to take Biology at Higher. I only chose it at Nat 5 to keep my options open, and I don’t enjoy it at all - mostly because of my teacher. I did find the topic on the heart and the dissection really fascinating, but that’s probably the only part I liked.

English and Modern Studies are definitely out of the question. I took Modern Studies just to avoid a language, and I really regret it 😭. As for English, I just can’t stand it.

So I’d really appreciate some guidance on what to do.
Should I take Biology instead of Business?
Are there any Nat 5s I should consider taking ?
Would skipping Biology limit my options for the careers I mentioned?

For context, I got all As in my S3 exams, and I’ve got my prelims coming up soon.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Take Business Management, you seem to enjoy it a lot more than Biology and Biology isn't required for the careers you are interested in.

If you end up wanting to take Biology you could do so in S6.

I definitely agree with the above that you should take business management over biology. If you don't like biology then there is no point in forcing yourself through Higher.

I had to choose between the two subjects when picking my S5 Highers, and I'm so glad I went with business. It's a crash-higher for me, but from what I've heard from my friends about biology it seems to have been a great choice. I'm doing much better in business than any of my smartest friends are currently doing in biology.

For the careers you're interested in biology is in no way required, and maths, computer science, chemistry, and physics most likely are (depending on each uni).

I think that if there's any Nat 5s or crash-highers that you're interested in then it would probably be best to wait to take them in S6.

Hope this helps, and if you have any more questions, feel free to ask me. 😊

The careers you are interested in don't really need biology too much, other than Chem eng and forensics which might have biological aspects - check all the unis you are interested in to just make sure you are not closing any doors.

If you take bio, chem and phys that will be three sciences, which is completely doable imo but just keep it mind - you will have three projects, etc.

You said you liked the heart dissecting aspect of bio - have you thought about human biology? I know you said you are not interested in med but a lot of schools consider HB and Bio the same so this might be a good way to keep your interest alive. Because you said you're not too interested in business and you are just taking it because it is easy, this might be an alternative.

But I never took business and dk how useful it may or may not be - and @jasmineva3128 does take it so maybe better to get advice for ppl with first hand experience. I generally tend to have the view that business is something you learn by doing and if you already run a small business you probably know a lot about it without taking it as a subject. But obvs it's up to you and what you think will be most fulfilling.

Same thing for English as for bio - it's a very very common higher and my school forced everyone to take it to higher. I don't know if it's required for any of the degrees you want to do but just make sure so you're not in a tricky situation later.

Tldr advice would be check uni requirements, it's never too early and keep as many options open as you can (I mean for everything you are interested in) and talk to your teachers/upperclassmen about the actual topics Higher includes and whether these will be interesting/useful for you.

Best of luck x

Like @MaryamMajick said above, I take Higher Business Management. If you've got any questions about the course (although I've not completed it yet), then I'm more than happy to help. 😊

I would like to add that with you liking maths you may quite enjoy the finance unit in Higher Business. I'm only part of the way through it just now, but understanding ratios and the different sums that make up earning sheets, ect, is really important.

thanks, that’s really helpful! sounds like sticking with business is the right move for me then 😅 i’ll probably wait on any extra Nat 5s or crash-highers until s6 if i feel like it. really appreciate you taking the time to explain all this!

ahh thanks, that’s really useful 😅 i think i’ll stick with business for now since i already run a small one, but human bio does sound interesting so i might look into it. definitely gonna check uni requirements properly too so i don’t box myself in. really appreciate all the advice x

Hey!!
I done very similar Nat5's to you and I hope your exams go well!!
I'm currently s6 and i'm applying for chemical engineering and I didnt take higher biology!
if you find nat5 business easy, PLEASE take higher!! i felt the same exact way, and higher business is VERY similar to nat5 - just abit more info to memorise!

if you are considering engineering, you dont need biology at all (unless biomedical eng)
Higher bio is a very intesive course and there is so much content (according to my friends) so it may get in the way of your other highers.
If you have Higher physics, chem, and maths you will be all set for any engineering course

(PS i know you didnt ask this but DO NOT choose higher english i beg😭 it was the bane of my existance last year and i regret listening to everyone after getting told "jobs require higher english")
