Chances of getting into these masters

Hi everyone,

I’m currently in my final year studying BSc Finance at Durham University. My grades so far are:

First in first year
2:1 (65%) 2nd year
Looking to have a first in my final year.

I’m applying to Risk and finance at LSE and RMFE (risk and financial engineering) at Imperial.

Do you think my profile gives me a realistic chance of admission? Would a good motivation statement and strong academic references help ?

Thanks !

Hi there,

I think you should go for it! The entry requirements for both are a 2:1 minimum, so as long as you get a 2:1 overall for your third year then you meet the degree requirements (even better if you end up with a 1st!)

Your final year project supervisor and/or head of course would usually be doing your academic reference(s), so it would be worth having a quick chat with them about what you're applying to, and what you want to get out of your masters so they can write a suitable statement for you.

As for your personal statement, I'd emphasise skills such as statistics and data analysis, maths skills and quantitative work you've done at uni, academic achievements. Talk about any professional experience if you have it, or any volunteering you've done if it relates to what you're applying to.

You might also have to supply a CV, so I'd work at making it the best it can be. Your uni should have careers advisors or something similar, and they can usually help with CV boosting and making it look professional so I'd recommend contacting them at some point too 😁

Imperial say that the GMAT isn't a requirement to apply, but it does add weight to your application if you have done it, so I'd also think about whether it would be worth doing that or not, just to boost your application!

I hope this helps - definitely chat to your tutor as they may be able to give you some advice ☺️
Good luck!
