Bristol University application offer likeliness

Hi,
I’m a bit worried if I am going to get into the university of bristol. I’ve been to their open day today and I really enjoyed it. I want to study economics and management (entry of AAA) and currently my predicteds sit at BBB.

I study maths, psychology and business a level. In psychology I got an A for my year 12 mocks 1 away from an A*, I did these without extra time (I’m under review for extra time, I’ve emphasised how much i’ve struggled since April year 12 and currently got retested for extra time). I will try raise my predicteds to all AAA. But with psychology i’m gutted that the teacher won’t predict me A* when i’m willing to work really hard for it and struggle with timing, she using my grade D against me in my recent test when I lost 15 marks (around 5 questions) due to a lack of time. I do EPQ and sportsleaders which will hopefully help me get accepted as bristol don’t look at personal statements.
My GCSES weren’t strong either, and I am eligible for a contextual offer (low income household, single carer and first in family to go to uni). My GCSES are all 5’s and 6’s, one 4 and one 7. 😓

Please can someone let me know the likeliness of me being accepted? (I am also thinking of applying Warwick or bath A*AA) Do you think I will be accepted with AAA into these? (taking into account contextual offers, EPQ and sports leaders).

Contextual at Bristol for your course sits at ABB. Similarly, both Bath and Warwick have AAB contextual- so getting those extra predicted is definitely crucial. Because that course tends to be popular at those top unis, its always ideal to apply with grades on or above those contextual offers as they are more competitive unis- so that AAA would be perfect. Usually they require GCSE English at a 6 but im sure they can be flexible around that regarding background etc. So yes AAA would be more than enough! (As long as you make sure you fit that contextual criteria which can sometimes differ from uni to uni) - but yes perfect to apply your even 1 or 2 grades above that contextual which is perfect!

Your best strategy would be to drop the EPQ and focus on the 3 A level grades required for any offer.

Hey, I understand you are eligible for a contextual offer but many contextual applicants will have a better GCSE profile. Bristol has already started giving out offers for Econ/Econ and Mgt, so hopefully you apply soon with predicted grades that actually meet the requirements. Please consider Lancaster/Manchester instead of Warwick/Bath, Warwick will not appreciate that you do not take Economics at A-level, same with Bath. They are competitive and most applicants will take Maths and Economics as well as Further Maths and have better GCSEs while also being 'contextual'. Hope this helps

Hi @leannelol

I'm sorry this is worrying you, I'd love to give my input to try and help you out! 😊

If you really enjoy Bristol, I highly recommend still applying there even if you are worried about being accepted. For your UCAS application, it's normally recommended to do 1-2 aspirational, 2-3 matching you predicted grades, and one safety option below your predicted grades. As long as you follow this format, there is no harm in applying for something slightly above your predicted grades, as you will still have a safety net.

Next, if you haven't already I recommend trying to talk with your psychology teacher about if there is anything you could do to prove you deserve to be predicted an A, or A*. There is no harm in having this conversation.

If you are struggling to reach your desired grades, I also agree that dropping the EPQ may be a good option, as universities prefer you to have good A-levels.

When it comes to Warwick and Bath, apply for just one, not both, as you need to make space for some safer options. Look into the modules, location, campus type, cost of living, etc. These factors may help you decide which university would be a better fit.

I hope this helps, please feel free to ask me any questions,
-Sophia (University of Lancashire)

Thank you all for your responses. I made the decision I am not going to drop EPQ unless my grades are significantly below my target. I chose EPQ to prove that I have the essay writing skills as I got a 4 for my english language GCSE (long story). Bristol also reduces the entry requirement if you get an A for EPQ, which I’m sure I can achieve.

I will apply to either Warwick or Bath knowing the risk. I want to choose these unis as they are close to me and I don’t want to go too far to manchester. I am willing to work really hard for Year 13 to ensure I get these grades. Atm it’s stressful because of extra time stuff, I know I can’t rely on extra time but I really need it. To put it into context ive practiced past papers and essay questions timed and manage to run out of time.
I know Bristol don’t look at personal statements as I went to their open day.
I have a psychology biopsychology test next week, so I hope I do well so I can get predicted that A*. However my teacher did put me down a bit when she said there’s not really any chance of me proving that I can get an A*, when I was 1 away from an A* in my year 12 mock. I’m not sure how else to prove it to her. From now until December, I will do past papers (not a lot) and essay questions to hopefully prove it to her. With maths and Bsuiness I can prove that I can get an A, as I have been working hard since year 12 and using all my frees.

Let me know your thoughts 🙂
