Building surveying

Thinking of doing building surveying next year. Does anyone have any experience of Oxford Brookes or Liverpool John Moores? Also looking into Nottingham Trent and Reading. lJMU or OB are my favourites at present. I’m particularly interested in moving into heritage surveying eventually. Would appreciate any feedback. Thank you

As you have already indicated your preference in heritage, why not take a look at the course modules to see which uni offers heritage-related modules? Good luck.

Hi,

I’m a third-year pharmacy student, so I don’t study building surveying myself, but LJMU is a strong choice for this course. Here’s why:
•The course is fully accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Chartered Association of Building Engineers (CABE).
•There are opportunities for a paid placement year or studying abroad, giving practical experience and boosting your CV.
•The course covers technical knowledge, design practice, management, and law, providing a broad skill set for a varied career.
•State-of-the-art facilities and strong links with industry give an advantage in preparing for your future career.

Liverpool itself is an exciting, affordable, and diverse city. There’s always something to do, and the student union has many societies and events running for all interests. Our campus is well equipped with study spaces, including the 24/7 Student Life Building, plus two other libraries nearby at City and Mount Pleasant depending on your campus.

For more information, here’s the course page https://www.ljmu.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduates/2026/30176-building-surveying-bsc-hons

I’d also recommend attending one of our open days, you can book here https://www.ljmu.ac.uk/study/undergraduate-students/undergraduate-open-days

Hope this helps,

Hi @Mchiltonjones,

It's great you're considering your options for Building Surveying - I would echo what Tayba mentioned; attending open events can be the best way to help work through a shortlist of universities you're interested in, as well as chat to any current staff or students. They'll often be able to give you a good insight into what the day-to-day study would be like, as well as any key modules or opportunities you would want to get involved with!

I'd also recommend looking into the placement opportunities at any of the universities you're exploring. These can be a great starting point into networking for your career, as well as perfect for showing the real-world applications of your knowledge and skills to future employers!

If you're interested in NTU, we cover Heritage and Conservation in detail as part of a third-year module in Building Surveying, and we have open days coming up on 15 November as well as 6 December if you'd like to visit!

I hope this helps, we're wishing you all the best with your applications! Let us know if you have any questions for us at NTU.

Hello, I hope you are well. Thank you for your interest in Oxford Brookes University!
We offer an exciting course in BSc Building Surveying.
Building surveyors get involved in every stage of a building’s life design, construction and management. So to succeed in your career, you’ll need a huge range of skills. Skills to survey buildings, to assess materials, predict costs and lead others. We’ll give you all that and more.
A key part of this course is the work placement year. As it’s compulsory, it means employers have a guaranteed pool of talent, so we get top businesses coming back each year to offer you a spot. Our focus is on helping you develop the skills you’ll actually use in the working world.
The course is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and the Chartered Institute of Building. You can become a student member of these industry bodies. However, unlike many accredited courses, we believe you shouldn’t be limited to one pathway. The construction industry is so broad that we designed the course for you to try your hand at a range of specialisms. Our construction courses share content in years 1 to 3 so you can change course up until year 4.
You can find out more about this course here: https://www.brookes.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate/building-surveying
If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact the admissions team by email: [email protected] or telephone: 01865 535000
