References

So I dropped out after my first year of university. I am now reapplying for the 2026 UCAS application and was wondering whether I should have a professor from my previous university write a reference letter or my school.

I believe that my school would give a much more informed reference as they will know me better. However, my university grades were not the greatest and perhaps a reference from a professor who has offered to write one can calm any issues with my previous grades.

Please let me know.

Hi Anom,

Having a reference from your old school is an excellent idea. In fact this UCAS article recommends using your old school for referencing if possible. Additionally, it also recommends linking your application to your old school if they allow it. I highly recommend reading this article as it gives lots of excellent advice about references!

I hope this helps, please feel free to ask me any questions,

This really is up to the requirements of the uni that you are applying to - some will ask for a reference from your previous uni.
