Feedback on my Econ uni choices?

These are my five Economics uni choices: Essex, Reading, Southampton, Lancaster, and Surrey. I’ve got ABC at A level, and I’m a bit below the usual offer for some of these. Any advice or experience with these unis, especially for Economics? Would love to hear your thoughts

Hi @Bovinator 👋

Hope you are well! Thank you for considering Essex as one of your choices!
We have a great economics department who are supportive and will help you whenever you need during the course of your time at Essex 😊

Regarding course entry requirements, that will not be a big problem. If you do not meet the entry requirement criteria, you still have a chance in getting on the course with us. You may be offered options based on your grades such as a foundation year or an alternative similar course. We look at grades yes but we also do look at other factors as well hence why we offer our students options when they do not meet the criteria. This is not a guarantee you will get into your chosen course but it is a possibility and is a very common route most students take.

Hope this helps a bit more 😊

Hi @Bovinator ,

So I also got ABC at A-Level, and was then offered a place at Southampton for BSc Accounting and Finance through Clearing. So it definitely is possible, despite being lower than the grade requirements, albeit for a different course.

Southampton ranks at number 15 in the UK for their Economics and Econometrics course, and based on my experience, the lecturers are really great and helpful, and the university offers so much support to help with different issues and needs (and I'm genuinely not just saying that)! There are so many different resources and opportunities you can access as a student here. But yeah, obviously I cant speak for actual Economics students, so hopefully you get some responses from them here!

Hope this helps ☺️

Just wondering, are they predicted or achieved grades?

So I’m applying for the BA course which doesn’t require maths.
My economics grade is an A

Predicted

I would suggest applying to the foundation year courses, as you're more likely to receive offers from them, afaik Reading, Leicester, Kent, Surrey, Sussex all have Economics courses with foundation years, where you meet the requirements. My advice would be to apply now for foundation year courses, then go through clearing on results day if you achieve your predicted grades, because a lot of unis will lower their entry requirements, iirc unis such as Exeter were offering courses for BBC/BCC on results day.

Hi.

This shouldn't be a big problem as the university cares most about your passion and reasoning for the subject area alongside any work, course or educational experience you have.

We do offer a foundation year across most subjects (I did one in business) including economics at Henley Business School at UoR (the school I was at) and I can answer any questions regarding this. Econ Foundation Year UoR - info here

I would recommend contacting our admissions team here - [email protected] they will be best placed to advise you.

I hope this helps.

Kind Regards,

Heyy @Bovinator !

Thats awesome to hear that you’re considering Lancaster as an option!

I’m not studying Economics myself, but one thing I can say is that Lancaster is known for being quite flexible and will often consider applicants who are slightly below the stated entry requirements, especially if the rest of the application is strong. For example, I personally didn’t meet the exact entry requirements for my course either, but I was still accepted because they looked at my application holistically.

If you’re genuinely interested in Lancaster, it’s definitely worth applying! I would recommend signing up to our Unibuddy platform which lets you chat directly with current students who are studying Economics. They can give you a much better idea of what the course is like day-to-day, the workload, the teaching style etc. Link can be found here: https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/study/chat/

Hopefully this is helpful and if you have any questions about the university, do feel free to reach out~

Maybe a bit late but in clearing alot of the "high requirements" unis except UCL KCL LSE Oxbridge Bristol and Durham might take you in with those grades
