‘Blackmail’ interfering with my A-levels am i good?

Long story short, in April 2024 I said on a video with my face in it ‘you dirty f***ing n***a (n-word) even tho the 'a' in the word is cropped out in the slighest or sounds it haunts me. This guy used it to threat me or make a joke out of it in August 2024 (I was aged 15). By this supposed 'joke' he made out the video, he had sent it in a groupchat with my old 'friends' and laughed about it. Sure, that was fine as others I used to hang out with had said such horrible things and thought it was funny. However, from the day I was informed he had this it sent off a stress alarm in my body from the potential threat of people seeing it and sparking violence against me or being cancelled etc.

Therefore, I was stressed about it CONSTANTLY for 8 months straight from August 2024 - May 2025. I struggled to sleep, cried a TON, got sunken eyebags severly etc. I live in the UK so this type of thing can have serious repercussions.

DISCLAIMER - I am extremely sorry for saying this. I have developed and am now 17 and understand the total disgusting nature of using such a term.

However, things took a turn for the best, when I stopped thinking about it in May. I got amazing Year 12 results in my A-level mocks.

But, the stress from this video even though he last brang it up a year+ ago has came back in September at the start of the school year 2025 to haunt me - subken eyebags purplish tint, bloated face, some acne which I never had before making me super upset and doubt the worth of life anymore. This stress showed from panic attacks in class, could not study at home etc.

I am in my final year of High School now and really need to meet my target grades of all A's which big uni's have the perception of me achieving when I applied to them. Thus, such a video interfering in my life feels totally overwhelming.

Its really bothering me even though he doesn’t go to my school or knows anyone there its ruining my life, it manifests in intrusive thoughts every minute.

Will it ruin my future?

(please don't bump a thread within 5 minutes, it's against forum rules)

If it was 18 months ago and already been shared with your friends, is there any suggestion the person was going to share it elsewhere? It doesn't seem to have had the desired effect. Yes, it was a naff thing to say, but you're not the first teenager to say something which you thought was edgy.

Sorry, I wasn’t sure about the bump rules.

I want to go to top unis, I have applied to Bath and Durham but feel like I’m predestined to be leaked or something in a later job (at uni or later). I wish to do politics.

Is it over?

Thank you for reassuring me

Hey, this happened when you were 15. You will be 18 when you will start Uni, you will be 21 when you will Graduate, and perhaps 22 when you will start your first Grad role. By the time you start working, that incident will have been 6-7 years in the past. I believe you should just give yourself permission to put it all under the carpet and move on. Even if this gets brought up in the future, so what? You will say "Yeah mate i was a little stupid when I was a teenager". You are not defined by your mistakes or past actions, you are allowed to grow and move on. For me, this is in the same category as falling down the stairs in front of a lot of people - yeah you might remember it and feel embarrassed but they probably won't. I doubt people think about this anymore, so why should you too? Everything will be fine! You won't lose your Uni spot

Doing politics and going into politics are two different things. You have to remember two things. The first is that countless people say countless stupid things on video or the internet every single day. There is a very good chance that those who had copies of this video and those who have seen it have long since entirely forgotten about it. The second is that this is a perfect example of the Spotlight Effect, where you think that people are thinking about you or paying attention to you a lot more than they actually are. It is extremely unlikely that there are people out there with this video just waiting for the perfect moment to leak it and cause the most damage. There is no viable mechanism by which that could happen for the purposes of you going to university, or even with your initial jobs out of university. It just isn't realistic.

Now, the one situation where that could change is if you actually become a public facing political figure, such as an MP. In which case it does become more realistic that someone could find a copy of this video, or remember that they have it, and either sell it to a media outlet or leak it. But plenty of political figures have skeletons in their closet, and realistically during the course of being selected as a candidate you will have told the political party about this video already and they will have made contingency plans to deal with it if it comes to light. That is perfectly normal in politics. Even if it then comes to light, it will cause short term damage and then things will get back to normal pretty quickly. Many prominent politicians have done far worse things in recent memory and suffered few or no lasting effects politically. Given your age this isn't realistically going to have any significant impact on a political career, assuming as I say that you tell your party about it so they're not caught off guard if it does come to light.

So in the short term there is no reason to worry about this at all. In the longer term you'd only need to worry about it if you ended up working in a role that is public facing, and which may therefore prompt people to leak the video. Even then, it's not likely to have any notable impact. In short, you shouldn't be worrying about this.

Thank you but it feels SO SO SO heavy.

I’ve been stressed about this for 9 months now meaning my health indicators have gone to complete ****.

I struggle to even study now and have panic attacks on a daily basis.

What adivce would you give to combatting these specifically?

Exercise. Mindfulness and meditation. Therapy. It sounds like a situation where all three of those could help. If you're having panic attacks on a daily basis I think it's clear that you need to be looking at more significant intervention than asking for help on an internet forum. For any sort of health issue I would normally advise going to your GP, but my only concern in that regard is that GPs don't always have the right expertise and experience when it comes to mental health, and in particular can be very quick to prescribe medication when other avenues haven't been exhausted. It's for that reason that personally I'd try those other options first, but others could entirely reasonably disagree with that.

Like I said in my post before, you need to slowly let this go. I sympathise with you that it feels heavy but in reality people probably forgot about this and do not think about it at all. Maybe they don't even have the video anymore. And also think about it logically, how would that conversation go? Would they just email the Uni that you attend "Hey, this is one of your students saying the N word" ? Nothing will come out of it, they won't kick you out for that. Even if you get pulled into a meeting, you could just say this happened at secondary school when you were very young and didn't truly understand the weight of the word etc.. I highly doubt this will follow you around like you think it will.

The probably forgot about the video because it’s kinda old but do you still see them in school?. Is the guilt of saying it eating at you or are you just scared of getting hated on. If you ever become an influencer or important figure it might get sent out. Lowkey hate stuff like that.

Just try moving on. If something does happen then maybe it’s your karma. I don’t know why everyone is acting like 15 is so young like what is the context to be saying something like that?
