From panic to plan - How I cracked essay writing at uni

Writing an essay is not exactly everyone’s cup of tea. Every time I try to write anything I always end up like Spongebob, taking an hour to write ‘THE’ and nothing else. I can’t even describe how many times I’ve re-written this blog, let alone think about all those times burning the midnight oil on course work, extended essays and research summaries. I think the number one reason why a lot of students think essay writing is difficult is because they mostly improvise, don’t have a structure they follow, and expect themselves to write cohesively from the very beginning. No. You NEED the structure. So getcha head in the game Troy Bolton, cause I’ll be giving you a game plan!

Step 1 Understand What’s Being Asked 🔍

Read the question/s slowly.

Learn the difference between analysing, comparing, and evaluating

Break it down so you know exactly what you’re supposed to do.

Step 2 Do your Research 💻

Only keep stuff that actually answers the question.

Jot down quick bullet points instead of rewriting half the textbook.

Close the 24 tabs that don’t help

Step 3 Make an Outline 📝

Intro this is where your thesis statement should be

Main points in the order they make the most sense.

Conclusion a neat wrap-up.

Step 4 Rough Draft First, Polish Later 💎

Dump all your ideas. Make a word cloud, annotate your handouts, etc.

Don’t stress about grammar at first.

Editing comes later drafts are meant to be just drafts.

Step 5 Edit in Stages

Fix structure and flow first.

Check evidence and make it sound clear.

Do grammar and formatting last.
