PGCE at Hope University vs SCITT with long commute – advice?

Hi all,

I’ve got an offer to do a PGCE at Hope University, but I’m also considering a SCITT which also awards a PGCE.

My main concern with the SCITT is that it’s over an hour away from me (I live in Liverpool) so the daily commute would be long.

For Hope, I know placements are allocated by the uni, and they try to consider your address, but I’m wondering: does anyone know how likely it is to be placed somewhere relatively nearby?

I’m also curious about the workload difference between the two routes. Would the PGCE at Hope mean significantly more work outside school hours compared to a SCITT which awards a PGCE, or is it fairly similar?

Any experiences, advice, or insight would be really appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

Hi there!

Congratulations on your offer to study a PGCE with us!

The vast majority of our PGCE placements are in the Liverpool City Region and as you have said, we try to take into account your postcode when deciding on placements.

I would say the main difference between our PGCE course and SCITT is we have an initial teaching block before placement where you will learn teaching skills and have chance to settle in whereas if you do SCITT you will go straight into a school and will learn as you go. It really depends on how you think you would learn best and what you prefer for which you would choose.

If you have any questions let me know!

I'd avoid the SCITT - some don't prepare you well to be a teacher.
