Medicine books

hi I’m in yr 12 and I need to start doing supercurriculars so I decided to read books that relate to medicine and everyone’s recommending the same 3 books but I want something that’ll stand out on my personal statement. So are there any niche books that’ll look good on my personal statement statement and books I can reflect on and chang my view on medicine.

Hi,

Final year medical student at Leicester here. I don't know if this is one of the three books you keep being recommended, but I loved reading 'The Doctor Will See You Now - The highs and lows of my life as an NHS GP' by Dr. Amir Khan. I found it gave a really accurate depiction of NHS primary care, while still being really entertaining!

I would say though, don't force yourself to read something you don't like, it will come across whether or not you are actually interested/enjoyed reading the book.

Hope this helps!

Doesn't even have to be a book, the British Medical Journal might be a good place to start to get your teeth into some of the things being talked about by professionals and academics in the field of medicine - https://www.bmj.com/

Work experience is a much better way of showing you know what is ahead of you and what a medical career is likely to entail rather than reading a book about it.
