A-levels

Hey, I'm a y11 student currently studying Maths, Triple science, Art, History, Spanish and English and time for picking A-levels is creeping up and it's getting increasingly more nerve racking every time I think about what I want to do in the future, on the one hand i want to go into medicine as I love biology and it's a field that pays well but in that case I would have to spend around 6 years for uni. So because of that I'm thinking of picking Bio, Chemistry, and Maths but I'm not so sure if i want to dedicate that much of my life to it and if ill change my mind sometime, on the other hand I also don't want to stop doing art so should I do a 4th A-level its kind of my comfort subject but everyone says 4 A-levels is really difficult to keep up with. Also I'm not the biggest fan of Chemistry but if i switch that out for art there's not really as many subjects I could go into at uni level and for future jobs bio and art doesn't really fit
Also thanks if you read this far into my yapping x this is really stressing me out, I have to decide before December and that's too close.

Are you doing 8 or 9 GCSEs? 😧

You will require a lot of 9s and 8s for the most selective medical schools. However, some medical schools don't care about GCSEs. 🙂

I’m doing biology, chemistry (both AQA)and maths (edexcel) and I have to say that my view in chemistry completely switched when I started a levels. At gcse, it was really difficult and it it still is but just less vague and I’ve been keeping up because I don’t want to cram. Also, medicine doesn’t pay well and you have to rise the ranks and become a consultant I think to actually get paid really well. That’s why you should only do it if you’re dedicated because the content at uni is insane.

Hi @Maria Yeremenko

This can definitely be a tough decision, especially trying to think that far ahead! I had no idea what I wanted to do at gcse or a-level.

Does your 6th form or college allow you to start with 4 a-levels and then drop one?
This is what I did as then you get to keep your options open and get an idea of what you enjoy studying at a higher level. You could potentially keep 4 if you feel like if you can manage the workload, but if not just drop the one you least enjoy.

In terms of what your a-levels will get you into at uni I think you would be surprised by how many options you still have, even if you do choose a range of a-levels. This thread I started Share your chosen A-levels and what you are now studying at uni - The Student Room might be useful to look at to see the range of options.

I hope this helps and good luck!
