DSA Captia Laptop

Hello,

I have been recommended a new laptop through captia dsa.

I was just wondering how much DSA will actually pay for (i’ve seem some people say about £380)?

Also with Captia do they give you a list of upgrades or you do ask for any laptop when upgrading? (my supplier is also remtek)?

Thank you

Hi there,

I received a DSA laptop through Remtek (my assessor being Capita as well). It depends on what the DSA assessment has said you require. Remtek do give you a list of options of laptops for upgrading which I would highly recommend as the original laptop will be the cheapest laptop they can justify giving you (feels very cheap and clunky). You will have to contribute £200 yourself towards the laptop and then in my case I think they only ended up paying around £100 on top of that to pay for the laptop.

I hope this helps

Thank you very much, this was very helpful.

How long did the process take? I am in my second year so am already getting DSA so I assume it is a slightly different process than getting it with everything else. They said they have recommended me a laptop and I need to wait for the funding letter to come through, how long did yours take to come through?

Thank you

I had my assessment in the June before I started my first year and got my equipment in August, so I believe it would have taken about a month to get my funding letter. It really depends on how many other people are going through the process, because for my sister it took considerably longer because she had her assessment in September.

I think it depends on what they recommend for you. I had my heart set on a MacBook long before I applied for dsa so when Remtek sent me their upgrade sheet I obviously upgraded to what I wanted. I had to pay £730 which includes the original 200 but I didn’t mind as it means its insured for the duration of my studies (6 years) and I have plenty of useful features and software to help me. I see it as if I’d bought one myself I’d have paid over £1000 and that wouldn’t have included any insurance or specialist software.

And the insurance is very good! I broke my laptop screen before my studies had even started through negligence and they paid for the repairs and postage. Moral of the story is don't leave your laptop on your bed under a duvet where you can't see it.
