Hills Road or stay local - any advice?

Hi, I’m a year 11 student currently predicted grades 8/9 and is deciding between going to Hills Road or staying at my current secondary school for sixth form.

I’ve researched Hills Road a lot and seen the great prospects it provides. The curriculum looks amazing, the campus is beautiful and the social opportunities seem to be endless! However, there is one major downside for me. To travel there every day, I’d have to take a **1 and a half hour bus ride each way.** I know I could just finish some schoolwork on the bus but I’m unsure of making the commitment to wake up super early and arriving back home quite late. Apart from this setback, I would love to go to Hills Road.

On the other hand, if I was to stay at my current school for sixth form, I’m doubtful I would have a similar academic life as Hills Road. They have decent opportunities, a good curriculum, and an extremely good 10 min walking distance from my house, but the major downside is their computer science department. I’m currently doing GCSE CS and the teachers have been nothing but dull, going through Craig and Dave videos and expecting it to carry us through all the content. My older brother stayed here to do sixth form and he has also warned me that the computer science department is horrible. It’s the subject I am passionate to take at university so this is why it’s such a major letdown.

Can anyone give me some advice or experience on what to do in this situation?

TLDR: Hills Road is perfect except for an hour and a half bus ride each way, current school’s sixth form is decent and is in walking distance but has a horrible computer science department which is devastating as it’s the subject I want to take at university.

It sounds like you’ve really thought through both options, and it’s great that you’re already considering what’s best for your future studies.
Hills Road clearly offers strong academic opportunities and a great environment, but the travel time is a big commitment and could impact your routine and wellbeing over two years. On the other hand, staying at your current school has the benefit of convenience, but if Computer Science is a subject you’re passionate about and want to pursue at university, the quality of teaching is important.
It may help to think about:
Which environment will help you stay motivated over two years?
Whether you could balance the long commute with study, rest, and social life
If your current school could support you with CS in other ways (e.g,. external resources, clubs, extra tutoring)
If possible, you could also visit both sixth forms again, speak to current students, or ask about the support available for Computer Science. This might give you a clearer idea of where you’ll thrive both academically and personally.

Hi, I'm a Year 12 at Hills Road and was in a very similar situation that you were (maybe we're talking about the same school). I get the bus at 7:12 if I have a 9am class, which sounds horrible but it isn't as bad as you think, at least for me anyway because I just zone out and listen to music. For me, I can justify travelling almost 2 hours before my lesson if I know that I'm getting a much better education then I would be if I stayed at my secondary school when I would only need to travel 20 minutes before my lesson.

I don't do computer science so I can't comment on that, but politics is a really great interest of mine and I want to pursue it in the future, but the politics department at the sixth form at my secondary school was tiny with only 1 inexperienced teacher, so I knew I wouldn't get the same opportunities and quality of teaching if I stayed there. At Hills, my experience of politics has been far better than it would have been, as I have teachers who really know their stuff and make me fascinated by the subject rather than having to learn it to pass an exam.

Deciding to go to Hills Road has been one of the best decisions I've made, and I think if you have the ambition then you should definitely apply, as everyone is so nice and the teaching is really great.

Tysm for your advice and experience! It’s reassuring to hear first hand that the long bus ride isn’t that bad so long as you occupy yourself with something and that the teaching/environment at Hills is great. You might be right about it being the same school btw, I haven’t heard anything from the politics department at my secondary school’s sixth form. Hills Road has almost certainly become my first choice now, thanks again!
