Has anyone gotten into economics through clearing

I may not get the grades I need AAA for the unis I’ve applied at - as a result will probably need to use clearing - I’m likely to get AAB - is that realistic

Hi @Pob72

Many universities have had economics open for clearing in recent years, however be aware these are not considered your "top" universities for this course, however this is not a major issue as you will still be receiving an economics degree at the end.

I recommend you begin looking at safer options for universities and check their grade requirements. This way you can feel much more prepared on results day. Have the list ready and the phone numbers, then you can get straight to calling up if necessary.

I hope this helps, please feel free to ask me any questions,

Why have you picked all AAA choices - don't you have a more realistic Insurance choice?

Hi there,

AAA-AAB = solid set of grades so congrats on those!

In short, no one will be able to predict what will be in clearing until results day and so the key is to keep a solid eye on the UCAS website as well as university websites to see the vacancies on offer - sometimes they will be made available the afternoon before results day.

So you may be able to get an Econ place if you ring up the unis and you meet all the requirements they ask for, but please do be prepared to have a back up option (Politics with Economics or International Development with Economics?). Alternatively, you could take a gap year, and apply in the 2027 cycle with your achieved grades, looking into unis with requirements that match the grades you achieved. Gap years are never a waste of time - could give you some thinking time, time to get some part-time work and money together for uni, and time for travelling if you want to as well.

Hoping this helps, best of luck!
Yes, people have invariably gotten into an economics degree at some university in the UK via clearing. Whether these are the universities and courses you would want to go to, and whether those or other courses you may hope will be in clearing will actually be in clearing, entirely depends.

Thank you for your reply. Could you let me know if Bath for eg would consider my application if I applied after a gap year or if I do a resit to improve my grades? - Should the need arise- which hopefully it won’t -

Hi there,

We consider a variety of factors when looking at applications. However, I must say Economics is one of our most competitive and popular courses and we often are unable to give offers to people even if they meet or exceed our standard entry requirement of A*AA.

We have actually got a newly-published page dedicated to admissions details for Econ applicants: Admissions for A level students for Economics

If you decided to do resits then there are obviously no guarantees that you'll receive an offer but applying after resitting will not disadvantage your application in any way.

I hope this helps you a little - best of luck 🙂

And surprisingly Bath had Economics in Clearing last year - either they are not that popular and missed all of their offer targets, or they held back places specifically for clearing. All rather curious.

That’s actually good to know - thanks - problem is I’ve put in Oxford and LSE probably a mistake I know but it’s done now - which I am unlikely to make - Manchester haven’t heard back but stand a reasonable chance - same with Kings - have left my 5th choice open - want a realistic but good option which would accept AAB or even ABB
