EPQ Topics : Career or Interest?

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to decide on my EPQ topic and could really use some advice. I’m torn between doing it on cosmetic dentistry, which I’m passionate about, or Mount Everest, which I find fascinating.

I’m wondering:

Would doing Mount Everest put me at a disadvantage when applying to university, especially for a science or dentistry-related course?

Has anyone done a topic that was more general or adventurous like Everest, and how was it received?

Just be aware that no Dentistry course requires an EPQ, or puts any value on it.
Your time / energy would be better spent on getting A grades in 3 x A levels.

I'm aware of that, but if I did my epq about dentistry then would that show that I am genuinely passionate about it and make me stand out?

No. If its not a requirement then it wont even be noticed.
Informally research some current topics if you want to, but doing a formal EPQ is a total waste of your time.

I’m also doing an EPQ but on like diet and tooth decay. I’m not going to prioritise it over A levels and UCATS but I really wanted to do it as well so I would have something to talk about if I ever made it to the interviews and also putting it on my personal statement.

Just remember that you can do this just as an interest - it does not have to be as part of a formal EPQ.

Damn I just started doing a formal one because I really don’t know what other extracurricular activities to do and I’m considering whether to drop it or not because I feel like I could develop research skills and presentation and organising skills. I’m so conflicted right now but I will try to make a choice soon because I want to do it on diet and oral diseases..

You can talk about anything you like at an interview - you don't have to have written a formal essay about it, just 'I've read' is fine. And most questions/tasks will be about the 'skills' required - manual dexterity, communication skills, observation, NHS Values etc.

Have you done any relevant work experience or do you have any planned?
Have you been to any Open Days and asked what that each Uni wants to see in a Dentistry application?

I’m working on one of those future learn courses currently because my school requires us to do those short courses. I am planning to go the qmul open day because I really wanna go there but it’s so competitive. Thanks for the resources.
