Oxford Foundation Year Applicants

Hello everyone!

My predicteds are A* A* B (History, Economics and Maths) and I’m applying for Law
My AS Results from Y12 are A B E (though I have mitigating circumstances of eviction where I faced possible homelessness and I had health issues)
I meet all of Category 1 and category 2 and 3 factors of the criteria’s for Category 3
My PS included stuff like residential trip (specifically Slaughter and May), work experience at a different Law firm, writing articles and a competition (Bar Mock Trial)
My reference is quite strong as well.

These are just the things about me and the stuff I have on my personal statement and reference and what I’m applying for! I wanted to ask if 1. What are the chances I get an interview or an offer and 2. What else is everyone applying for and with and if there’s any other details they would like to share!

Thank you 🙏

No problem 🙂 I'm essentially reusing my personal statement I wrote last year but updating it, and I can't seem to get to a point where it actually sounds any good as I really don't like the 3 question format lol.

Hi,

I’m currently a year 12 student studying A-Level History and Btec Business. I’m working towards distinctions in my Btec and an A in History. I’ve also got 5s on my gcses and a 4 in maths. I’ve joined to multiple of insights and work experience in the magic circle law firms. What are my chances and is it any worth of applying to it for 2027? Thanks!

As for your GCSEs relatively they can be considered quite low for Oxford but obviously everyone’s circumstances are different and maybe there is an explanation to this?

True 🙂 I'm planning on applying to St Andrews, Durham, Edinburgh and Exeter. Where else are you applying?

I’m thinking Oxford Foundation Year, Bristol, Warwick and Exeter. I already got my offer for Exeter which is ABB so I’ll take it 🫶🫶🫶. But I am unsure with my other offer because I just don’t know if I should be aspirational etc Durham or if I should be safer

Congrats on the Exeter offer 🙂 ! I'm scared that I'm being way too aspirational with mine as I was planning on applying with another safer option until I found out about the Oxford foundation year, but I've essentially just based mine on where I think I'd be happy to live for a while and what I've heard about the course but I guess that's a bit easier with achieved grades instead of predicted. You seem to have quite a good range of entry requirements with your current choices though imo so I guess it comes down to what you are happiest with

My only thing is maths is quite a weak area for me but it’s manageable but I really want a A achieved grade but I just had October mocks and I got a C (2 above from AS). Overall idk if I’m being too aspirational and it’s so bizarre to me bc all of year 12 it was As and Bs which is ****ing me off to no ends and I feel that based off the E in maths I got at AS my teacher has kind of given up on me which makes me so upset 😭😭😭

I mean, that at least shows you're making progress in the right direction and you're only 2 grades away from where you want to be and I'm guessing you have another set of mocks at least before the actual exams? It's really unfair that your teacher has given up on you bc they should support you, and I really get that it sucks not getting the grades you want / used to get but u at least have time to do what you can especially as you can get the grade you want, and most people should take into account your contextual factors. I mean, I doubt this is good advice but all I keep telling myself is that if im not happy with where I have offers for then there's always clearing but the idea of that scares me so much lol. Sorry idk if this makes sense / sounds weird lol

I’m not even like a bad student or anything which is what makes me so upset about it. Like I’ve genuinely always been a good and unproblematic student and like I’ve had parents evening and she’s completely given up on me which brings me to tears 🥲

That is awful, even if you were a bad student or anything I don't think anyone should be given up on bc that's so demoralising ☹️ Are there any other teachers / support people that you can talk to about this that might be able to help at all? Your teacher shouldn't be making you feel like that :frown: I'm sure you'll be able to surpass your teacher's expectations of you no matter what though 🙂

That's fair, that motivation worked for someone I knew at gcse lol. Icl maths sounds terrifying but at least it's something that u can measure your progress with and practice quite easily rather than just writing essays and hoping they turn out ok like I did lol. Also ig there's quite a lot of resources for maths but idk numbers scare me
