What is the disability and/or lgbtq+ support like at Leeds?

So I'm currently holding an offer for Leeds university (the russel group one) but I don't have the ability to come up and see the school in person.

Does anyone know what the disability and/or lgbtq+ inclusion is like there?

hello!!! i didn't have time to really join societies or be super social in first year, but there is an LGBTQ+ society which you can join!!! for disability inclusion, you'll probably be asked to apply for disability services at the start of the year. dependent on your disability, you can receive a grant or a few items i think??? my friend got/had the chance to get a printer and allowance for paper/ink. you can also get exam accommodations, be put in a quiet classroom for exams instead of the exam hall, get extra time, make it easier to apply for assignment extensions as they can just refer to your disability services information.

you can also book 1-1 in person/online meetings with student wellbeing (although if you need real support, there's not much they can do).

in general i would say inclusion is good, there's a lot of people who present queer who i've seen around campus, and if something happens based on LGBTQ+ factors, then i think??? there would be a system to report it, or maybe even through your academic personal tutor.

last year, there were a group of girls who were doing an anti-trans "free speech" table outside the union, but i saw lots of pushback from the general student body. the days after, the ground where the girls were had trans flags drawn in chalk, it was really heartwarming to see that the hateful lot are just the loud minority. LGBTQ+ society instagram posted about them being there so you can be aware of it when it's going on.

are you planning to do a languages course? pls lmk!!! i'm doing french (post A-level) and chinese and i love meeting people who also love languages!!!!! depending on the language, your classes might be quite small or absolutely huge. if you want to make friends, i would highly encourage to push yourself to approach others and make friends, even if it does sound really scary!!!!

hope you join us at uni of leeds next academic year!!
