Commuting to Uni!

Almost half of Sheffield Hallam students commute to university which is huge! So if you’re planning to live at home and travel in, you definitely won’t be alone.

I know that one dilemma that lots of students face when applying to university is whether to commute or not, so I thought it would be a good idea to put lots of great commuter information and advice into one place! ☺️

So many of my friends commute to Uni and I think a lot more people than I realised do actually commute! I completely get why you would and it isn't something I really thought about when I started, despite me living close enough to commute, so it's something that I wanted to discuss. I know one of the most popular reasons for commuting is the cost of living (although Sheffield has been named one of the cheapest uni cities!) and Hallam is a great place to commute to as we are located right next to the train and bus stations.

We have a lovely community of students here, so many of which commute, and I know a few of my friends have met other commuter students over social media and met up which is nice. I always thought commuting meant you wouldn't make as many friends but everyone I have met who commutes has had just as good a time and made so many friends!

If you’re thinking about commuting, we’ve put together some handy tips for commuting to university from travel discounts and time management to making the most of student life.

You can also join our commuter group chat to ask questions directly to current commuter students and connect with others who are thinking about commuting too. It’s a great way to find your community before you even start!

I would really recommend any students who are thinking of commuting to come to one of our open days. The next one is coming up on the 23rd November and we also have an open evening on the 3rd December. Open days are a great way to ask questions and find out more about the campus and you can see for yourself how close we are to the train, tram and bus stations!

You can book a place on one of our open days and find out more.

Please ask me if you have any questions!

I hope this helps some of you,
Lucy - SHU student ambassador
