Imperial Materials Science 2026 - do I have a chance?

I am applying for Materials Science and engineering (Imperial, Manchester) and Physics (UCL, Warwick) and either Physics/Matsci at QMUL/Bath/somewhere else (no idea for this option tbh)

My predicted grades are A*AA in Spanish, Maths, Physics but I am quite confident I can get my Maths grade changed to an A*.
Supercurriculars: physics and matsci books, EPQ-type essay on quantum concept, Royal Society science exhibition, learning to code with Python, engineering competition

My teacher has said that Spanish as my third subject is a 'wild card' and universities like Imperial won't like it. This does make sense, but they do accept it as a third A-level so surely they won't hate it completely. Do you think it's much of a disadvantage? Am I likely to at least get an interview?

For Material Sciences, Imperial interviews roughly 2/3 of applicants, so as you exceed the entry requirements, there is a likely chance, depending on your personal statement and reference. It is still a competitive application; however, it might be less competitive than an applicant with a 3rd STEM subject. The offer rate for the course is 35%, so bear in mind that it is competitive. Material Sciences at Manchester is a good choice. However, I am slightly concerned with Physics at UCL, as there is no admissions test or interview; they will emphasise the personal statement and application, and I'm not sure how well you've combined elements of Materials and Physics. For your 5th choice, I would recommend Leeds and Sheffield (Both AAB with reduced offers for EPQ), as both have a strong reputation in Engineering. Hope this helps 🙂
