Islamic student finance petition

Hi all.

Around 10 years ago the government brought up the idea of a shariah compliant student finance option for Muslim students and those who wish to avoid an interest based loan. This has come up a few times over the years yet nothing has been done yet. I feel that the options to fund university fees for Muslims is extremely limited, so much so that a lot of potential has gone to waste and so many are missing out on gaining a higher education and having a good career.
So, I’ve started a petition to ask that the government finally does something about it.

Please sign and share far and wide. Insha’Allah it will make a difference.

I fail to understand why an educational student loan is so bad? Surely for a talented student to miss out on higher education just because of this is in itself haram and very unfair to the poor student! I am actually christian but both of my university children are muslim and both have student loans, my husband (A muslim) has no problem with this at all as without the loan affording university wouldn't be possible. Why potentially ruin a child's future because of this? Their mental health would also suffer.

How would this work for non-muslim children? If there is a scheme for just muslim children to get interest free loans this would not be fair to all the others who would have interest added loans, it must be fair to all no matter the religion, if a parent doesn't want their child to get a student loan because of the interest then surely it's up to them to find the necessary funds that are acceptable to their religion!

Degree Apprenticeships exist

Does this help? Found it on another thread.

"Many UK-based scholars have said that if a halal alternative truly doesn’t exist and you have no other realistic options, it may bepermissible as a last resort to take the current loan especially if:

It’s for essential education, not luxury;

You intend to repay it as soon as possible;

You keep actively looking for halal alternatives.
This is based on the Islamic principle of “necessity removes prohibition” (darura). Still, different scholars have different views, so ifyou’re unsure, I’d recommend contacting Al Qalam or a trusted scholar for personal advice.It’s great that you’re planning to work after A-levels. Universities often offer on-campus jobs that are flexible for students (libraryroles, admin, ambassador work, etc.), so try asking your chosen uni what’s available. Some also offer summer work before theacademic year starts.
