help with choosing work experience!

Im looking to study dentistry at KCL or Queen Mary's and wanted to know if work experience had to strictly be about the course you want.

i already have work experience in a pharmacy and in a school lab but i wanted to know if doing work experience in a hospital was worth it as its a bit easier to get than dental practices and i also understand that as a dentist you may have to interact with doctors and maybe go into a hospital sometimes?

obviously i will mainly focus on dental related work experience but i dont want to waste time doing hospital work experience if it risks my ps lacking focus and not really being relevant

I would email a lecturer on a dentistry course at KCL or queen Marys and ask how they look at hospital work experience for dentistry as it may not be worth your time. You already have a lot of experience so I don't think you actually need much more but it's worth checking.

Hope this helps!

Hi,

You don’t need dental-specific work experience as long as you can reflect on and relate the transferable skills you’ve gained. Hospital or other healthcare placements can still be valuable, especially if you can demonstrate communication, teamwork, and understanding of patient care in your personal statement. Many dentists also work in hospitals in areas like oral surgery, orthodontics, or paediatric dentistry, so it could be worth asking if you could shadow them if you decide to go ahead with it.

Hope this helps,
