how to get an 80% in a law assignment

hi! I don’t think I’ve done v well in my first assignment (the file has somehow been corrupted and idk if they will accept my assignment) so I really need to try and get an 80% in my second assignment in January or I will have to redo the first assignment

I’m in first year and the module is in contract law - for the second assignment we only will have 1 week to do it and it’s another problem question so if anyone has any advice please please let me know and I would appreciate any advice

Thank You

Hey @ribbed-pear! This is all very understandable and it does sound stressful. But it is great that you are being proactive which is the best way to go about it! As a third year law student, who did Contract Law in her second year, I can say getting 80% is definitely possible. And here is how I went about it, I hope this helps!

1.

Learn the problem question structure:

Contract Law problem questions tend to be marked heavily on how clearly and logically you apply the law. The best approach is the IRAC method (Issue, Rule, Application, Conclusion).

Issue: Identify what legal questions you need to answer

Rule: State the relevant law that govern that issue

Application: Apply the relevant law to the facts (ideally step by step), essentially showing how the law works in this scenario

Conclusion: State your clear conclusion showing how it answers and relates to the issue

*Key tip: Do not just state the law, apply it in depth. That is where high marks come from.

1.

Focus on core contract topics

Contract Law tends to have common topics that come up again and again in problem questions. So this includes;

Formation of contract

Terms

Vitiating factors

Termination of a contract

Remedies

Understanding these, really helps you handle problem questions.

1.

Utilise past or sample questions

You can ask your teachers for these or even check online. This helps you become familiar with answering problem questions. And I found out it really helped me feel stronger when the final assessment came around.

1.

What to do when the question is released

Read and understand the question

Have a clear plan before writing

Stick to structure, let each issue have its own IRAC structure

Note word limit and stick to it

Proofread once finished

1.

For your irrecoverable assignment

For this, I was wondering if it is possible to email your tutor or module leader explaining the issue. And if you have evidence, be sure to apply that. They tend to be understanding if you communicate early enough.

Lastly, I would say to really boost your mark, ensure you use correct grammar and show critical thinking.

I really hope this was helpful and if you have more questions, feel free to ask. All the best!

hi! Thank you so much for this advice! I really appreciate it and am hoping that for the second assignment I might be able to do it if I really really put the work in but tbh it’s a lot of pressure and I’m hoping if I have to redo the first assignment it will be ok

I emailed my lecturer straight away but she said that she can only accept the final submission on moodle - I contacted IT to see if they can see if the file was corrupted because of an error made when I submitted or because of moodle & so far the persons commented that it could be another display issue so I think that maybe this has been happeneinh to multiple people. However, if it’s because of an error I made they won’t let me resubmit the assignment ☹️ I think that the university regulations r pretty strict for my module & my lecturer said that she thinks even if it’s corrupted she won’t be able to mark it above 1% unless the IT support say otherwise

thank you again for the advice!)

To pass law assignments, I usually start by breaking the question into key legal issues, then apply relevant case law and statutes. I use the IRAC method (Issue, Rule, Application, Conclusion) for clarity and strong arguments. Proofreading and proper referencing are key but you can link up if you need guidance.

Your library or study skills tutors should have access to Problem Questions for Law Students. It's a one stop shop for understanding the question, organising your writing, OSCOLA, and using lecturer feedback https://www.amazon.co.uk/Problem-Questions-Law-Students-Study/dp/0367646706
