Which uni to put as my firm?

I have been very lucky to get all five choices accepted. My two favourites are York St John’s and Uni of York I am probably leaning more towards York St John’s. For what I want to do York is AAA and at York St John’s it is BBB. I am unsure which one to pick as my firm and what to put down as my insurance? Any advice will be helpful? Thank you.

Hi Jessica I would put down the one you definitely want to go to as you firm to make sure you definitely get onto the course you want to do. As York St Johns has lower grade boundaries this sounds like an easy choice so id go for that one if it's your favourite as well. However if you're still stuck between the two, going to visit them in person if you haven't already will really help. Then you can picture which one you'd prefer to live at for the next 3 years and what kind of environment you'd be in.

Hope this helps 😁

Have you had a chance to visit either university yet? If not, it might be worth attending an open day to get a feel for the campus and meet the academic staff and current students on your chosen course. This could really help you make your decision!
Very early to decide. The usual recommendation is to wait until around Easter.

Visit offer holder open days and get a real feel for the campus and faculty. It may completely change how you think about your offers

As above - you have until next May to make this decision, and there is absolutely no advantage with making a earlier decision. Sit on your hands, go to offer-holder visit days in the New Year onwards, and listen carefully to subject presentations. Look around and do some careful thinking about where you want to spend the next 3 years, and why. Then decide.

As others had said, there is no need to rush. Is there any particular reason restricting yourself to the 2 unis in York? What are your other offers and the required grades?

Usually people tend to select a more competitive uni (or the uni requiring higher grades) over the less competitive one as firm choice.

Take your time and think it thoroughly before making the decision. Good luck.

Hi Jessica!

Happy to see you're considering YSJ! I had the same dilemma as you - I was debating between UoY and YSJ (I knew I just wanted to live in York!) and after visiting both in-person twice, I truly had my heart set on YSJ. The support and community here is unbeatable and I'm so glad I came here.

If you have any questions about YSJ that might help you decide which university is best for you I'd be happy to answer them on here or over DM. As others have mentioned you have lots of time to decide yet so come and visit us if you can! We have an Open Day this Saturday and a visit day in December - you can have a look here: https://www.yorksj.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/meet-us/open-days/
But once again no rush! There will be more Open Days in the new year 🙂 However, if you're wanting to go to the Xmas markets while you're here, December visit day is the way to go!

Good luck with your decision making! Sounds like you're doing fantastically if you've been accepted for all 5 unis, so congrats! :h:

Best wishes,
