Commuting to City, University of London’s Northampton Square Campus

Settling into life at City, University of London means finding your best route through the capital’s transport network. Fortunately, the Northampton Square campus—home to many of City’s schools, including undergraduate Law—is ideally located in Islington, surrounded by excellent transport links and plenty of travel options to suit every lifestyle and budget.

Getting There

The nearest Underground stations are Angel (Northern Line), Barbican (Circle, Hammersmith & City, and Metropolitan Lines), and Farringdon, which also serves the Elizabeth Line and Thameslink trains. Farringdon is especially convenient for those commuting from further afield, offering fast connections across London and beyond.

If you prefer the bus, routes such as the 4, 56, 153, and 214 stop just a short walk from campus, making it easy to reach from all directions. Buses can be slower during peak times, but they’re often more scenic—and a good opportunity to take in London’s architecture.

Cycling and E-Bikes

For an active and eco-friendly journey, cycling is an excellent choice. There are secure bike racks around campus, and London’s Santander Cycles offer affordable bike hire with docking stations nearby. Additionally, Lime e-bikes are widely available in the area, allowing you to start and end your ride almost anywhere—ideal for a flexible, last-minute commute.

Commuting Tips

- Use contactless payment or an Oyster card—daily and weekly fare caps make travel cost-effective.

- Avoid the rush by travelling before 8 a.m. or after 9:30 a.m. when possible.

- Check TfL Go or Citymapper for live updates and route planning, especially if you rely on the Tube or buses.

- Walk short distances—the campus is well within walking distance of all nearby stations, and the area has plenty of cafés and green spaces to enjoy en route.

- Always plan ahead—London’s transport is reliable, but occasional delays and diversions are inevitable.

With its central location and excellent connectivity, commuting to Northampton Square soon becomes second nature. Whether you hop on the Elizabeth Line, glide in on a Lime bike, or stroll from Angel, getting to City is quick, flexible, and distinctly London.
