no clue what to pick postgrad - mmu, uom, teachfirst

so ive been deadset on teaching since primary school and ive put loads into pumping my skillset to prepare for it. by this time next year i should have applied for my pgce in secondary history. i had a careers fair the other day and spoke with teach first and now i have three paths to choose out of.

1. manchester met - im doing my undergrad here so staying in would mean familiarity, i also know they're rated quite highly for education degrees.

2. university of manchester - always wanted to go there (didnt go for undergrad bc i rejected them thinking id fail my alevels 🤣) looks like they have a really good course.

out of those two, i was lowkey set on uom then came teach first

3. teach first training programme - sounded amazing paid placement, pgce, qts the whole lot

now i have absolutely no clue. theres a fair upcoming 15 sep that will have all three, does anyone have any tips, things to consider, or questions i should be asking to narrow my search down?

Hi @islaissleepyy

Great that you're considering staying at Manchester Met for your PGCE Secondary History course. As one of the largest and most experienced teacher training establishments in the North West, we have a lot to offer our teacher training students, including specialist facilities and world-class education research department. The PGCE is a demanding programme and our academic team will support your professional development and personal wellbeing throughout your teaching and whilst on placement.

If you are able to pop down to our Postgraduate Open Day this Wednesday afternoon, it would be worth having a chat with the PGCE academics to find out what we can offer you that maybe UoM or Teach First can't. Attending an open day would help you to decide whether Manchester Met is right for you for your teacher training - you can attend the subject talk and speak with the academics at the subject stand.

We have a Primary Ed student on our Student Ambassador chat platform, so you may wish to get in touch to find out about what it's like as a teacher training student in our Education faculty: Chat Platform.

If you can make the open day, I'd also suggest visiting the Student Life Fair and chatting with the Finance team regarding PGCE funding. Or you can contact them at [email protected] or on 0161 247 1045.

I'm sure you're already familiar with the Get Into Teaching GOV.UK (education.gov.uk) website, if not I would 100% recommend referring to this before applying. This is a useful resource when completing your PGCE application, with guidance on writing your personal statement, as well as providing information on funding. They also have online advisors on hand who can give further support.

Hope this helps. If you have any further questions, please get in touch with our Course Enquiries team at [email protected] or on 0161 247 6969.

Mel 😊

Good morning @islaissleepyy

Firstly, I would like to thank Mel @Manchester Metropolitan University for recommending our service.

We would be delighted to support you to make the right decision for YOU. Our advisory service is completely FREE and we can help you in a number of ways because every adviser is a qualified teacher - so we not only know the application process, we speak from experience having been in the classroom ourselves.
