Computer Science (and/or Mathematics) with AAB

Hi, wondering what the best options are for Computer Science?
I achieved AAB last year (A in maths and CS), and have work experience in mobile app development including a computer vision project.
I am also particularly interested in Data Science, pipelining etc, and even the maths part.

Is it worth applying for universities requiring AAA?
Should I look for Computer Science with Mathematics or other related degrees?
Any universities that stand out for facilities, course content and employment/internship chance? I am currently looking at Liverpool, Lancaster,Exeter,Dundee amongst others.

Any help would be fantastic

Its certainly worth having one choice just above your grades. You might get an offer, but be prepared for No.
A course with any sort of placement, work-experience or study abroad adds depth to your degree and makes you more attractive to graduate employers.

However, which course/where is very much a personal choice - everyone has different 'course' interests and has different needs/comforts in terms of Uni environment. This is the point of going to Uni Open Days - so that you can look around and see the facilities in the dept and get a feel for the Uni itself.

Hi there,
That’s a fantastic question, and it’s great to see how passionate you are about Computer Science and Data Science. With your strong grades in Maths and Computer Science, plus your work experience in mobile app development and computer vision, you’ve already built an amazing foundation for university study.

I’m currently in my final year studying Computer Science at London South Bank University (LSBU), and honestly, I couldn’t be happier with my decision. LSBU has been an incredible place to study, the teaching quality, support from lecturers, and hands-on learning opportunities have made my experience so rewarding. The university really focuses on preparing students for real-world challenges, and I’ve felt supported every step of the way.

LSBU’s BSc (Hons) Computer Science is BCS-accredited, which means it meets the professional standards set by the British Computer Society, a huge advantage for your future career. What really stands out is how well the course balances theory and practice. We don’t just learn coding; we build, test, and deploy real systems. There are also specialised pathways such as Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security, and Data Engineering, which would suit your interests perfectly, especially with your background in data pipelines and computer vision.

One of the best things about LSBU is the support network. The lecturers are approachable and genuinely care about helping you succeed, whether that’s in understanding complex algorithms or preparing for your first job. There’s also a strong employability team that helps students find internships, placements, and graduate roles, especially valuable with LSBU being based in central London, surrounded by top tech companies and start-ups.

From my experience, it’s definitely worth applying to universities that push you academically, but you don’t need to limit yourself to those requiring AAA. LSBU’s entry requirements are flexible, and what they really look for is passion, potential, and practical ability, which you clearly have. The learning environment here feels personal and inclusive, and you’re encouraged to explore your interests, whether that’s data science, machine learning, or app development.

If you’re considering your next step, I’d highly recommend visiting LSBU’s Open Day on Saturday 15th November. You’ll get to explore the labs, meet the teaching team, and chat with current students about their experiences. I can honestly say that choosing LSBU has been one of the best decisions I’ve made, the mix of academic depth, hands-on projects, and supportive staff has made me confident about stepping into the tech industry after graduation.

👉 You can sign up here: LSBU Open Day.
👉 You can also chat with our students through our Unibuddy platform: Chat with our students.

So, while you’re looking at Liverpool, Lancaster, Exeter, and others, definitely keep LSBU on your list. It’s a university that truly invests in its students, and I’m proof that you’ll thrive here if you’re passionate about computing and ready to learn.

Hi @escalating-sunbu,

Exeter is a really strong choice for Computer Science, especially if you’re interested in data science, maths, and things like pipelining or computer vision. The course is really well-structured: you start with the fundamentals in your first year, then you can specialise in areas like AI, machine learning, and data analytics in later years. There’s also lots of hands-on stuff you get to work on projects, develop your coding skills, and even do real-world applications like computer vision or app development, which sounds right up your alley!

One of the best things about Exeter is the support you get for employability. The course has strong links with industry, lots of internship opportunities, and career events to help you get experience while you’re here. Plus, if you’re interested, there’s the option to do a placement year, which is amazing for building a CV and seeing what working in tech is really like.

Student life in Exeter is really nice too the campus is lovely, and the city has loads going on. There are tonnes of societies, sports clubs, and tech-focused groups if you want to meet like-minded people or work on side projects. It’s really easy to get involved, and the community is super supportive.

With your background in maths and CS, plus your experience in app development and computer vision, I think you’d fit in really well and thrive here!

Hope this helps 🙂

Hi there

We're so pleased that you are considering Lancaster! With your achieved grades you would meet our AAB entry requirements. With regards to the aspects you are interested in:

Facilities: If possible, we would encourage you to attend one of our open days or book onto a personalised campus tour however you can get a glimpse of our InfoLab building and the facilities inside here: Computer Science at Lancaster University

Course Content: An overview of what is covered in each year of study can be found on our website here Computer Science BSc Hons (G400) - Lancaster University. The university as a whole is looking to improve the current curriculum across all departments so please keep an eye out for updates on our website as that'll be the most current information!

Employment / Internship: The careers team at Lancaster is fantastic and you will be able to have lifelong access to the service as an alumni! Furthermore, we have a dedicated Business Engagement Team which can help you build contacts and arrange internships.

With your grades and experience it may be worth contacting our admissions team (Contact us - Lancaster University) regarding whether you could possibly be considered for Computer Science (with Industrial Experience) MSci Hons (G404) - Lancaster University . This would be an integrated Masters with an 10-15 week industry placement in the fourth year which the department will help you arrange. The entry requirement is AAA however as stated on the website "Though not an essential subject entry requirement, applicants with A level Computing, Computer Science or Mathematics will be considered for a lower offer." so its worth a shot asking!

Hope this helps! Any other questions I'll be happy to assist.

Best Wishes,
